Twitter now available in emergencies with satellite providers

By Rachel King | February 9, 2012, 2:18pm PST

Summary: Twitter is being pumped up to save the day with the help from a couple of satellite providers.

Despite how big Twitter has grown over the last few years, there are still plenty of naysayers who argue that the microblogging platform is for twits.

Here?s another facet to Twitter that makes it even more useful. Twitter has teamed up with t?he two largest satellite operators,? Iridium and Thuraya. The plan is to give their subscribers access to Twitter SMS capabilities regardless of the mobile device they?re using.

Even better, Twitter can serve as an emergency line of contact and alerts in the case of a disaster ? even if phone lines and the Internet are inaccessible.

Twitter has posted a lengthy list of mobile providers worldwide that support Twitter SMS and instructions on how to make use of this service even if your provider isn?t listed.
