I bought a refurbished computer from a very reputable place (we've bought many there over the years) and have been downloading a couple of games I own on it. When I tried to install the first one, it gave me a pop up that said it couldn't complete the installation because of a missing MSVCR71.dll. I've seen a number of places to download that on-line, but I know that can be dangerous and I know I can trust your advise.

I have Windows 7 and use Norton for my antivirus, as well as Spybot Search and Destroy and Spyware Blaster, suggestions made by this forum a few years back.

Can you guide me to a safe download link to get the MSVCR71.dll on my computer? And...I need it to be pretty simple.....

Hi kerri This is a simple problem and is easy to fix. My advice is to take a look at this thread and see if that works first

You can use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to make sure system files are intact and to replace the file. Follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue

3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

Thank you, Nick. I went ahead and downloaded the games off the CD's and they are all working, despite getting the MSVCR71.dll message on the first one. Do I need this on my computer? Should I put it on just to be safe? I don't have any idea what it is, so I don't know how necessary it is. I'm a computer minimalist which tends to allow my computers to last a long time (10 years on my last one), but if this is an issue I will continue to encounter, I'd rather have it on here than not.

Kerri, msvcr71.dll should be packaged with the games.

If the games are running okay, well...ignore it.
