Microsoft is hoping that its Windows 8 tablets out this fall will eat into the dominant share of the market leader iPad. But one prominent analyst warns that the release of Windows 8 tablets could actually spur sales of iPads.
IDC today released a report for second quarter sales of tablets, and to no one's surprise, it shows the iPad with a dominant position, with a 68.2% of the tablet market, and 17,042,000 iPads sold. That's up from a 61.5% share of the market a year previous, when Apple sold 9,248,000 iPads, which means that the iPad growth over the last year was 84.3%.
IDC expects tablet shipments to accelerate. And it notes that the release of the Google Nexus 7, Windows 8 tablets and expected new versions of the Kindle could actually be a boon for Apple, because consumers may become so overwhelmed with choice, they'll simply default to the market leader.
