OK CHECK THIS OUT!
My problem is similar in that im trying to get permissions to my documents, which i know how to do.
THE differance is that the computer locks up when i attemp to do anything involving the old users files (ie: take permission, defrag, view, ect.)
I have school work, loads of music I produced and other things riding on this. I was just about to backup when this bacame an issue.
Oh and when i try to logon as the user whose documents im taking ownership of the PC locks up almost ammediatly.
PLEASE HELP

I created an account just to say thanks. I was having similar problem. My system wouldn't boot with one drive master so I had to set it up as a slave to access my files, only to find out I couldn't get into my user folder. I was going to break down before I found this page and just thanks a million Ross. I'd be crying from having to format my drive or paying someone else to recover my files if it was for you.

Hi everyone,
I was browsing through google til I found this forum and this thread and this is exactly the problem i am having now. I know this particular thread has been idle for quite sometime now but I would really appreciate any help (if possible from Michael). I quoted what you said before and the reason I did was because I could not seem to find Use simple file sharing [Recommended] for the part where you say I have to "clear Use simple file sharing [Recommended]".
Again, any help from anyone who has background or has had experience with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for the help.
Bummer

I had the exact same problem as you Adam.
Thanks to Ross's advice the problem is now resolved.
The only issue I came across when following Ross's instructions was that when going into the properties of the hard-drive and then after clicking on "Sharing and Security", the only tabs available were General, Tools, Hardware, Sharing, and Quota. But no Security tab!!
So in order to make the Security tab visible, I did the following steps (which is extracted from Windows Help):
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Folder Options.
On the View tab, under Advanced settings, clear Use simple file sharing [Recommended].
Now follow Ross's instructions and you should be fine.
Thanks all.
