Sorry I haven't followed your history. Have you tried the online AV scanning? Which ones? What was the result?

Sorry about not offering an explaination.

Last week one of the computers in my office was diagnosed by Calamity Jane with the Gaobot worm, and now the exact same symptoms are showing up on another computer.

This current computer is running Norton Anti-Virus, and when I open the NAV program I get:

System Status: Urgent Attention
Auto Protect: OFF
Email Scanning: ERROR

I cannot autoupdate, and I can't access any of the webpages on securityresponse.symentec.com.

Ok, let me see what has CalamityJane done with your other posting, so we'll try the same approach here.

I'll do some copy / paste adapted to your case here.

Please follow these steps, print out a copy of this instruction so you have it to follow it while doing the fixes.

But first, please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use C:\Program Files\HijackThis but feel free to use any name or folder you like. Unzip HijackThis again and save the contents (Hijackthis.exe) to the new folder you made. Then navigate to it and run HijackThis from there. This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.

0. Give HijackThis a folder of your own. DON'T RUN HIJACKTHIS FROM INSIDE THE ZIP FILE, BECAUSE IT WON'T BACKUP ANYTHING.

2. Reboot your PC into SAFE MODE

3. Find and copy the following files to a folder in your desktop named Junk:

Please notice that it's sCVhost.exe. The real one is sVChost.exe

4. Scan with HijackThis and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

5. Please search your system for a HOSTS file. If found, please rightclick to open and you'll get a popup box. Put a dot in *choose program to open* and then choose either Notepad or Wordpad to open it. If you see any entries inside starting with 127.0.0.* (where * is any number), delete those entries except for the one that says localhost. Close the file and you should be able to access the sites you need.

6. Reboot back into normal mode and get an online AV scan immediately at one (preferably two) of the following:

Let them remove any infected files found.

Reboot your PC between each scan.

7. If your NAV is working again, get the latest updates and scan your system with that as well. If NAV is NOT working see the final NOTE below to try to fix it.

What to do if NAV still doesn't work:

Error: "Runtime Error! . . .C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\<File name>. . .R6025 - Pure virtual function call" when running Norton AntiVirus

Auto-Protect displays "Off" and Email Scanning displays "Error" in the Norton AntiVirus 2003 System Status screen

8. After all that is done, please scan once more with HijackThis and post a new log back here and let us know how you are doing at that point.
