A few days ago my CD Rewriter gave up the ghost, so I had to buy a new one. On the box it says it's compatible with Win2000. But something is fishy with it. I installed it this evening, rebooted. It is recognized as a new one. I can read CDs, play music. So up to the next step. Install the new write software. After installing Nero told me to reboot, and that's when the sh*t hit the fan. Every time I end up in the blue screen of death: ErrorCode 0x00000035 (NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS) with differing adresses. How can I get rid of it?

Just to be complete, here's the HijackThis log and also a startup log since it has to be in here!

In General..

Error Message:
STOP: 0x00000035 (parameter, parameter, parameter, parameter) NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS

Explanation:
This is a Windows 2000 Executive character-mode STOP message. It indicates that the I/O system detected a call from one driver to another with no available IRP (I/O request packet) stack locations remaining in the packet for the invoked driver to use. Other memory problems might accompany this error.

User Action:
If this is the first time you have booted after installing new hardware, remove the hardware and boot again. Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the hardware and its drivers are compatible with Windows 2000. For information about the hardware, contact the supplier. If you are installing Windows 2000 for the first time, check the Windows 2000 system requirements, including the amount of RAM and disk space required to load the operating system. Also, check the Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the system can run Windows 2000. If Windows 2000 is loaded and no new hardware has been installed, reboot with recovery options set to create a dump file. If the message continues to appear, select the Last Known Good option when you reboot. If there is no Last Known Good configuration, try using the Emergency Repair Disk. If you do not have an Emergency Repair Disk, contact your technical support group.

A higher level driver has attempted to call a lower level driver
through the IoCallDriver() interface, but there are no more stack
locations in the packet, so the lower level driver would not be able
to access its parameters, as there are no parameters for it. This is a
disastrous situation, since the higher level driver thinks it has
filled in the parameters for the lower level driver (something it MUST
do before calling the lower level driver); however, since there is no
stack location for the latter driver, the former has written off of
the end of the packet. This means that some other memory has probably
been corrupted.

Parameter:

1 - Address of the IRP

This very rare STOP is encountered typically with mismatched filter
drivers, most of the time involving the display driver and drivers
that implement overlay window techniques. I have personally seen this
when I upgraded my display drivers without uninstalling my hardware
MPEG decoder drivers, and the result was this error. I had to recover
by booting into VGA mode, removing the hardware MPEG decoder drivers,
upgrading the display drivers, rebooting, and then reinstalling the
MPEG decoder drivers. Now all is well again.

I think what happened was that the hardware decoder drivers had
configured themselves for a certain parameter list expected from/to
the display driver, and when I upgraded the display driver without
first uninstalling the decoder drivers, the parameter list no longer
matched... so this stop code resulted.

Moral of the story: If you are using decoder boards like the
Hollywood+ or a professional grade capture board, it might be a good
idea to uninstall the support software/drivers for those devices prior
to upgrading video drivers.

First of all, typing on a laptop is quite difficult when you're not used to it... And edits don't do what I want...

This I also read, but when I put in the drive it started up normal. It started when I installed the new version of Nero that was included with this drive. I've rebooted a few times to get rid of the previous version of Nero. When I installed the new one it wanted to reboot and went into a vicious cycle of saying 0x00000035--> reboot. Reboot into safe mode gave me the chance of a log, but rebooting into anything else (network or last known configuration) ended up in the blue screen of death.

I'll read the following urls, but it's too late for me now, as it's 5 a.m. on this side of the line ;)

Once again, it's what I found as well. As said in the intro I replaced a fried cd writer. I think the drivers were okay (maybe out of date) but I could read CD ROM and CD Audio. When I reinstalled Nero the cycle began. Which is why I think it is in the startup routines.
At the moment I'm doing a complete backup to safeguard my data, and then I'm thinking of reformatting the system to get it working. The box says that this CD drive is Win2000 compatible. Since safe boot is possible (it only goes to hell when I want a network with it), reformat might be the only way to go.

0x00000035 NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS
This error occurs when the IoCallDriver packet has no more stack locations remaining.
Parameters

On the blue screen, the following parameters are displayed:

Address of the IRP
Reserved
Reserved
Reserved

Cause
A higher-level driver has attempted to call a lower-level driver through the IoCallDriver interface, but there are no more stack locations in the packet. This will prevent the lower-level driver from accessing its parameters.

This is a catastrophic situation, since the higher-level driver is proceeding as if it has filled in the parameters for the lower level driver; something that is required. Since there is no stack location for the lower driver, the former has actually written off the end of packet. This means that some other memory has corrupted as well.

*******************

Yes well i read all your post..but you left out the rest of the info on the blue screen.

Matters not that the plug n play or current recognized that installlation and it worked ..if you are sure the hardware is compatible..make sure the proper drivers are installed\ and not any default.

I got this same blue screen error (0x00000035) trying to
uninstall Visual Studio.Net RC1 on my XPpro machine. I
ended up incresing the IRPStackSize value in the registry
from 11 to 16. I also disabled a RamDisk I had running so
I can't be positive which fixed it.

Also what version of Nero are you using ??

Nero Installation FAQ
http://www.nero.com/...3734846333.html

Nero
http://www.nero.com/...1889268729.html

I had the some issue with Nero 6.3.1.17, Couldn't get it to install at all

This is what I did:
All you have to do is copy nero63117.exe to a temp folder, right click on it and hit "Extract Here" - then just replace the old msa.dll with the new one - old one is in /program files/common files/Ahead/AudioPlugins - and just hit setup and thats it, or you can go here
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/
and download
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/msa_inst.exe
which fixes the msa problem and other issues with Audio Files/Compilations.

Bookmark this ftp link ftp://ftp6.nero.com/ because it contains some cool tools like neros "General Clean Tool" That Cleans out ALL NERO Files and Settings - Good for Reinstalling when there are issues

Address of the IRP
Unfortunately this one changes every time, the three reserved ones are 0. I don't see a list of in-memory device drivers or memory stacks or something. It's all being dumped into a file in %SYSTEMROOT%\MiniDump. I've read on the net about a WinDbg from Microsoft that you can use to read them. It's not installed and in Safe Mode you can't install so that doesn't help either.

Interesting article!

Subscription content only.

In the last week five things had changed on my machine, a new hard disc and network adapter last saturday, wednesday I updated Kerio and friday the turn was for the drive and Nero. What I find curious is that I can safe boot, but if I safe boot with a network it'll crash. In fact every time I do something with a network it'll end in the 0x00000035 code on random stages during boot-up. So I tried unplugging the network card and other things, all to no avail.
A technician from my girl's work recognized the problem as soon as she said Nero so I guess I'm back to Nero... b.t.w. The Nero links gave me no ideas either.

I'll be back, and thanks so far.

The CD player is a Plextor CD-R PX-W5224A. According to nero.com it is supported from 5.5.10.15. The version that got installed and was included in the package is 5.5.10.18 (according to the Version Info from nero.exe).

The aforementioned technician gave the tip to rename ahead's directory. I did and it booted up fine. Only problem... Now there's another exception at the shutdown of the system. KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. I haven't researched this exception yet, because I hope to get rid of it tonight.

Tonight we're going to take a look at the internals. Maybe I've switched cables the wrong way or something. He's a hardware man, I've always been a software one.

I'll get back when I have more news.

The Microsoft link is indeed the program I was refering to. A shame that I didn't have it before. Could save a lot.

As an update. After going through the log files from Win2000. The conflict was indeed between the network and Nero. I'll be damned if I see a connection between them, but okay.

Fixed the MBR with FIXMBR (I have Linux on another partition) and reinstalled Win2000. So far everything is working okay, but I can look forward to a few days of downloading WinUpdates (38 critical and Service Packs for two years!) and reinstalling the rest. I've made an image with Norton Ghost, so if I ever again get killed off. Copy the image.

After that it's Linux's turn.

Update: after the installations and finetuning of my applications. I thought of making a Ghost image of my data. It would be nice to have it defragged first, though. So defrag started and after a while said 'Error writing sector ??? of MFT'. After ChkDsk and a reboot, the disc had disappeared on me...

Turns out the BIOS wasn't equipped to deal with large volumes (LBA 48 support). It said I have a 132 GB disc on which I can store 190 GB of data!!! Checking the BIOS gave the version 1.0, and the website of Intel said that large volume support was upwards of 3.0. Ok, we'll flash the BIOS to make it work then...

Nope, 'checksum bad'-->'system halted'--> dark screen!

I can try the Recover method of the BIOS and board, otherwise I can buy a new motherboard.

I wonder if it wasn't cheaper to buy a new PC, since I practically replaced everything inside!

Latest update.
We're practically running as we were. Recovered the BIOS with the Update BIOS disk and lifted the CMOS battery which in turn flushed the CMOS to its default.

Voila, the computer was resurrected again! Maybe I should call it Frankenstein! Best of all, the BIOS update had gone through, so I got a newly resurrected PC with LBA 48 support. Gone through some stress tests on the new drive, and everything seems to be working properly now. Apart from a few glitches.

When I Speed Disk-ed the new drive, it got really messed up. This time I had managed to get a Ghost image beforehand, so I could return the image. After that I started thinking...

I've always used Norton and it has always been a breeze. Speed Disk works on the old 80 GB drive, but messes up the 200 GB beyond recognition. Doesn't Speed Disk know how to handle large drives? That would seem strange, since it's the newest version around and updated through LiveUpdate. Windows Defrag does its work well, but doesn't defrag paging and MFT files... Windows Defrag is essentially Diskeeper, albeit a stripped one. Diskeeper Pro does defrag paging and MFT files. Would Diskeeper Pro be a good addition to my tools or not?

Anyone's ideas are welcome...

Another strange thing! Norton Disk Doctor keeps claiming that there are errors in the Security Descriptors on all discs, yet ChkDsk doesn't. NDD can't repair the errors either. Who's right, who's wrong?
