Shortly after getting an alert from my antivirus software, I went to my desktop and found this message:

A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

*System can not function in normal mode
Please check your security settings.

*Scan your PC with any available antivirus / spyware remover program to fix the
problem

Other than this message, there doesn't appear to be anything else wrong with my computer, but I'd like to get this message off of my desktop. I tried running both spyware programs that I have and deleting everything they found, but the message did not go away. Can you please help me?

Here is my Hijack This log if it will help any:

First:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HiJackThis:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {E2C514F1-E3FD-429B-9E03-2874A48C9382} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {E2C514F1-E3FD-429B-9E03-2874A48C9382} - (no file) (HKCU)

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Second:
Open the Display Control Panel
Select the 'Desktop' tab
Press the 'Customize Desktop' button
Select the 'Web' tab
Remove any items you did not install
Uncheck 'Lock Desktop Items' if checked
Press 'OK'

Well, I thought nothing was wrong with with my computer, but in following your instructions, I figured out something that was wrong. When I went to the Display Control Panel, I no longer had the "Desktop" tab. In fact, the only two tabs that I still have are "Screen Saver" and "Settings." I went to my girlfriend's account on this computer and she is not having any problems with her desktop and has all of her tabs, so it appears my account is the only one affected. Any suggestions?

Here's my latest HiJack This log:

First:
Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo1.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
start notepad.exe reginfo1.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo1.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.

Second:
Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo2.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
start notepad.exe reginfo2.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo2.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.

Launch Notepad.
Copy/paste the text in the box below into a new text file.
Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop

CODE
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=dword:00000000
"NoDispAppearancePage"=dword:00000000

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Reboot in Normal Mode

Then please check the Display Control Panel. The missing tabs should be visible.

My tabs are back, but if I go to the "Desktop" tab and click in the box of selections of different backgrounds, I am unable to select anything. I selected the "Web" tab under "Customize Desktop," but the only thing in there was "My Current Home Page" which I am unable to delete.

On the 'Web' tab, was 'Lock Desktop Items' checked?

If it was, remove the check mark and press 'OK'

Glad we could help ...

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer. This includes SP1 and SP2 if you use Windows XP. The first defense against infection is a properly patched Operating System.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Select Internet Options from the Control Panels, or from Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options)
Press 'default level', then OK
Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section set these options:
'Download singed ActiveX controls' - Prompt
'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' - Disable
'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not maked as safe'- Disable
All other options accept the default

3. Download and install the following free programs

7. Clean Temporary Files and Folders
Download and install the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! from here:
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
http://www.hijackthi.../CleanUp312.exe

Cleanup! will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders (a common hiding place). You may also regain a massive amount of disk space.
Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html

Run the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! that you have already downloaded and installed
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Then reboot into normal mode to let it clean out the remaining files.

8. Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm

9. Anti-Spyware Programs Compared
Want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is? Wonder how well any of the "rogue" programs listed above work? Check this link for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewa...-test-guide.htm

10. Alternate Browser
Consider using an alternate browser as your default. I recommend and use Firefox as my primary browser. It is still necessary to keep Internet Explorer current and protected in order to use Windows Update.
