[danimrath]

McAfee keeps picking up a virus called ntrootkit-J, the file it is trying to delete is winnt\system32\rdriv.sys if I try to delete it it says sharing Violation.

Hi danimrath,

You have a seriously messed up system!

You are running NewDotNet. If you installed it on purpose, I strongly recommend that you get rid of it. If you didn't, then definitely get rid of it.... To do so, go here and follow the directions: http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

I don't see a firewall in your log. If you don't have one, or use Microsoft's firewall in Windows XP, download Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm and install it.
Block everything that is not supposed to dial out!

Please follow all instructions as specified. Print these instructions to ensure all are followed.

Please download the following programs, but do not run them yet:

* rdrivRem.zip

• Unzip it to your desktop.

* Ewido Security Suite

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
• After the updates are installed exit Ewido.

* CleanUp!

• Install it.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

1.) Please double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

2.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program.

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop
• Exit Ewido

3.) Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

4.) After Cleanup! is finished, run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

5.) Make sure your firewall is on. Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

6.) Run BOTH of these online virus scans (NOT at the same time!):
ActiveScan
TrendMicro's HouseCall - check "Auto Clean"

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the contents of rdriv.txt, the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread

Hi danimrath,

Looks like you got rid of rdriv.sys after all...

You are using Imesh. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywarein...m/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use "Add/Remove Program" to remove it and any reference to Imesh.

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:

• New.net Domains 6.30
• P2P Networking
• RelevantKnowledge
• Select CashBack

and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

My computer never showed any outwards sign at all that I had spyware/viruses but it does SEEM like its loading windows when restarting a little slower, could just be me tho.

hey thanks again for help so far i did what you asked, but only cashback
was there to remove and winadx.inf and p2p networking were not there as well.

I guess that you mean after you uninstalled the programs.

Spyware doesn't have to do popups, or redirect. There are many ways to spy on people. Unfortunately. The computer will start up a little slower, after all you've unstalled some ewxtra programs to make your system safer. The firewall among others.

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

I don't have a particular favorite in the browser department. I myself use Opera though, but Firefox is good too. Install one, if you don't like it switch to the other.
