Your log is clean.

A crc error usually means the file is corrupted. Delete the SP2 file and download again.

Thanks. Glad I'm not infected.
I first tried installing sp2 from windows update website like normal and got the crc error. So then I downloaded a copy of sp2 on a different computer and burned it to a cd. I deleted temp internet files and then I tried to install the update from the cd and got the same error. Is there something else I need to clear first?

It is possible that you have a bad sector on your hard drive that is causing the problem.

From the Desktop...

Start -> run -> cmd (press 'Enter')

In the command window:
chkdsk C:

When done, if any errors, you will need to run again in fix mode.

To do that, open a command window as before, then

chkdsk C: \f

You will need to reboot to start the fix.

I ran chkdsk and it found some errors. (FYI, I had to use forward slash to get it to work: chkdsk c: /f)

Then I was able to do the windows updates.

But there is still something wrong with the computer. For instance, I click on My Computer and it takes 2 or 3 minutes for it to come up.

Any suggestion on what to try next? Do you think the hard drive is about to crash?

Lets check for hidden stuff running .... And yes, the hard may be the cause but its too hard to tell at this point.

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them. The program will take longer to run, but wil lgive us more information.

If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
The logfile is named 'Startup Programs' by default and will be located where the program is.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Your computer is clean.

Next step is to clean the temp files and folders. And finally defrag the disk

Download CCleaner from the link at the upper right of this page: http://www.ccleaner.com. If you don't want the Yahoo toolbar, be sure to UNcheck that option when installing the software or update.

Instructions for using CCleaner:
    1. Launch CCleaner and under Options > Advanced > UNcheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
    2. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    3. To protect logon cookies that you wish to retain, under Options > Cookies. Select and using the arrow move those cookies to the "Cookies to keep" column.
    4. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    1. In the Windows Tab:
    * Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    * Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    * Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    * Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    * Clean any others that you choose.
    2. In the Applications Tab:
    * Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
    * Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    * Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    * Please UNcheck "Utilities" (i.e., Ad-Aware, ewido and other security program logs.)
    5. Click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
    6. Click exit.
    7. Shutdown/restart the computer.

It must have been the hard drive after all. It has crashed and won't boot into windows. So I'm going to install a new hard drive. Thanks for all of your help.
