[ldbuchan]

Hi. I just got my computer about 2 weeks ago, and i'm already getting the win butler and other downloaders and trojans. I have no idea how to get rid of them.. I've tried deleting them but i don't know if thats enough. I followed your instructions about adaware and hijackthis, so if someone can PLEASE help me i would be very thankful.

FIrst:
Please download VundoFix.exe to your Desktop

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button."
when VundoFix appears at reboot.


Second:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Press the 'Scan' button and when done check the following items in HijackThis:
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\Windows\system32\ssqro.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.


While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\Windows\system32\ssqro.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode:

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread. (Be sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad)

Thank you so much for getting back to me.
I followed the instructions for the vundofix. It never prompted me to reboot, it just did it on it's own and i had to go into vundofix for it to start up again and remove another file it found. It rebooted again, and i found the vundo fix txt file and this is what it said (I don't think it finished properly). I waited to see if something else was going to be logged in there but nothing was.

First:
You are currently using hijackthis from a temporary directory, or from the Desktop.
This can cause problems and will leave backups scattered.

Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory.
Run the program from that directory from now on.

It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.


Second:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Press the 'Scan' button and when done check the following items in HijackThis:

You still have HiJAckTHis in a temporary folder, but since we are done, there is no need to move it. For the future, delete HJT entirely from your system, then follow these instructions to install it properly.

Click Here to download the current version of HiJackThis.

• Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
• Open Notepad > Click on Format > Uncheck Word wrap, if checked.
• Double-click on the desktop icon for HJTINstall.exe.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and HijackThis (HJT) will launch.
  
• Close any/all browsers, messenger, mediaplayer, Office and mail client windows and applications.
  
• Click on the 'Scan' button. When the scan is finished, press the 'Save' button. HiJackThis will open a Notepad document with scan in it. Save the log to your Desktop for ease in locating it.
  
• Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the contents of the log to your clipboard.
• Come back here to this thread, right click your mouse and select Paste to paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
• Make certain your post shows the entire log, please.
