Hi everyone. Can anyone help me get rid of some background processes that aren't vital to my computer's operation? I'm trying to reduce the lag in some of my games, and right now I have about 70 processes running. Is there something I can use to show you what's running and then you can figure out what's not needed? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi Audax
and Welcome at GSFs. Enjoy our small community like many others before. Uhhm, 70 processes running isn't such a problem but you can monitor the processes using the Task Manager of Window 2k, Windows XP, Windows Vista or maybe Windows 7 RCx. Make sure you have checked that small box called Show Processes of all (!!) Users to get em all.
But can you tell us more about:
1. What operating system is running?
2. What kinda games (name) do you play?
3. Do you play them online?
4. Do you run other programs when playing games?
5. Are you running any kind of AV, AS, AT, AP-programs?

Thanks for the welcome. I've been here before, but I couldn't remember my login information. :)
I just recently got a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Basic. It's a 2.16 ghz dual processor with 3 gigs of ram. I'm trying to play Titan Quest (Diablo 2 clone), and I just can't get it to run as well as I'd like. I'm always picky when it comes to getting the graphics as good as they can be as well as getting the game to run smoothly. I don't let anything else run in the background, and I recently just changed the visual effects of my laptop to just the bare minimum to free up memory. I'm running Webroot as my AV. I'm at college, and they block most online games, so I don't play it online. I just wanted to know what was safe to stop from running in the background. I know I have a lot more memory than I did on my old laptop, so I know 70 processes isn't terrible, but I had my old Gateway running XP down to about 25 or 30 processes.
I'm currently browsing through that black viper site right now, but I'm still not completely sure what I'm doing. Thanks for the replies, and I hope I can cut down some of these.

Hi Audax welcome to GSF, again.
Follow the 'services' guide; it tells what is necessary and not.
Google "Vista+speed up"...alot of advice.
Third, Toshiba loads alot of utilities that are nice, but franky unnecessary and are basic Windows utilities, like wireless networking, etc., so a good number can be stopped from start up (Start>msconfig>)
