i read a post from someone that had the same problem as me;

This is a bit weird, but I've never had an explicit problem with pop-ups, until yesterday when they just seem to appear at random if I open my browser. I've got a feeling it must have appeared during some serial number site I visited and now I'm bombarded with either pop-ups from, "zamingo," "ihatepopups.com" or some ** not wanted stuff here **es advert.

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

i ran ht and clicked all the boxes you told me to, and fixed the problems. when i botted up in safe mode i was able to delete

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Adstartup.exe
and
C:\WINDOWS\System32\VTPreset.exe
but
C:\WINDOWS\System32\apcmsft.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\apcmsft.exe(two i dont know why)
and
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ialwave.exe werent found on my computer even while showing hidden and important system files. heres my new ht log;

so everything went smoothly except for deleting two files ^^;;

Quite often the log has registry entries showing files as starting. That does not mean they continue to run and would be the current tasks list. So when we see them, we assume the file also exists. Often it has already been deleted and just the registry entry remains. What is of import to me is that they are not there now.

Now for good news... your log is clean!


At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

1. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

2. Download and install the following free programs

b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

yay im clean ^.^ i do windows update weekly, as well as a spybot search with spybot s&d and i scan with adaware weekly also. first time i ever had a pop up problem like this one, routers do a pretty good job =P, so i wont install any of the program you recommended just yet. have them downloaded so if ever a problem happens again, ill be sure to install them and head back here ;) thanks a bunch. ^.^

dont know why they returned, or maybe they never were fixed. im just hoping someone can help me out =)

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0B90AA1B-F649-44C3-9FD3-736C332CBBCF} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adstartup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Adstartup.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Adstartup.exe

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

ran ht and fixed the problem you told em to select, but adstartup.exe didint exist, but i did manage to find adstartup.psf or some etx. similar to that. anyways heres my ht log.
