I am hoping someone on this forum can help me. My computer keeps flashing a message telling me that it is infected by "Trojan horse Downloader.Small.8.AU" in file "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lsd_f3.dll". I scanned with AVG which found 6 viruses,healed three and put one in the vault but, couldn't deal with the Trojan horse. I then scanned with AD-Aware which found 2 data miner objects which it deleted. I have now run HijackThis and am posting the log here for further help. Thanks in advance.

This file, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lsd_f3.dll, is not in your log, but you can boot into Safe Mode and delete it idf it is still there.

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

I followed your instructions but could not delete the file "C:\Windows\System32\lsd_f3.dll". Prior to your reply, my computer flashed a message telling me that it is infected by "Trojan horse Dropper.Small.5.BJ" in file "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{EECEC607-09B!-457C-BD23-3BA09E466370}\RP39\A0000801.exe". I tried to delete this file but, my access to the "System Volume Infomation" folder was denied.

Your log looks clean but I have a few questions.

You said you could not delete C:\Windows\System32\lsd_f3.dll Why were you unable to delete it? Provide any system message if possible.

You cannot modify file sin the system restore area. To clear it you need to reset system restore.

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?



One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.



To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.



(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

Check Turn off System Restore.

Click Apply, and then click OK.



2. Reboot.



3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

I reset the system restore as you suggested but, I cannot Zip the file you requested me to send you. I have copied the error messages I received into a word document which I am attaching to this message. I don't have any particular problems with my computer except occasionally I get a message telling me that my computer is infected. I am concerned about the security of my system especially with regard to online banking and password theft. Thanks for your help.

The other possibility is that the file is legitimate. Check it's properties and see if that reveals anything.

No need to -- I ran across another log with it, The file is bad.

Try searching your registry for the file name and post the result here.

I searched the registry and found two locations with the file. I took screen shots and inserted them on a word document which I have attached.
