Hello!

Need some help here, infected w/the COOLWWWSEARCH.MSCONFIG. Adaware did not catch this, but Spybot did and suggested I restart and run again. After many times of doing this, it is still showing up. I d/loaded CW Shredder and ran that and it shows I am not infected, but when I run Spybot again, shows infected!

Here are my Log Files from HighJack This:

Thanks!

Some one will look at your entire log soon for help..

But posting this link here for you to see..

http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...showtopic=19841

My comments are at this time on that spybot call out..is that it sure seems stange that two members, starting now last night, have come up with the same problems in sypbot ( you can see his screen shots ) so i think we will solve this mystery soon.

Maybe the gurus already have the answer. Wave.gif

Thanks.

Additional Information

auntminna,

I do not have any real answers for you on that COOLWWWSEARCH.MSCONFIG but i am beginning to think it is a false positive...try to up date your spybot again as that might help..but i am hearing that people who have this are associating it with maybe also having firefox installed or Black Proxy as you do and this is the chat about it..

******************************************

I got coolWWWsearch.msconfig, DSO exploit, huntbar, unknown
only firefox

I just updated my spybot and it found this entry:
CoolWWWSearch.Msconfig: Autorun settings (Registry value, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\msconfig

Is this a false positive? I didn't have this yesterday. Adaware finds
nothing. Would it be save to delete?

I have XP SP2, Kerio, Proxomitron, HOSTS, .PAC file, BlackProxy,
Firefox, adblock, and a router. I have also used spyware blaster.

Thanks,

area51

I think this has something to do with BlackProxy, so I'm going to keep
it. Besides the Google Desktop, BlackProxy and it's .PAC file are the
only things that are different then before. The other items are my
antivirus and something for my motherboard. I'll ignore it.

Yup I got the *Advance Detection Library* box thingy come up too

Oh good! I had a similar thing happen here. It wanted to create a
Restore Point but appeared to freeze. Then finally a box appeared
saying that it couldn't delete the thing it had found (CoolWWWSearch
MSconfig) as it was probably already in use and did I want to allow
SpyBot S&D to run on next startup. I said no as I'll do it myself and
don't want any more things starting up automatically when I boot up the
computer. :-(

That was the one it found here...but it created the restore point OK...just
took an age (about a minute) to fix the temp.txt file...did you have IE or
Avant open when you ran the scan, if you did run it again when you've
closed them...I don't use them unless I have to and I think the CoolWWW
thing is an IE exploit...

LOL I only had 5 IE pages open and EIGHT Avant tabs when I ran the
scan... :-)))
It'll have to wait as I'm in the middle of research. :-(
Oh, I've just checked and it did make the restore point.

I'll run it again when I've finished doing what I'm working on... ;-)

I'm not surprised if it only checks 2259 instead of 20798...

Hi auntminna,

I see you are running AVG6 Anti-Virus from Grisoft.

Please read these links.

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

You need to get to download AVG7 Free version when it is available as the other version will no longer give you any protection after 31st December 2004.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log.

As Hunter said I think it is a false positive. There's nothing in your log that suggests CoolWebSearch.
Hunter
Would you do us a favor and also post your Spybot log ? so we can see the COOLWWWSEARCH.MSCONFIG

That way we can get a better handle on it..and also report it if it turns out to be a FP.

Thanks
auntminna
Come think of it, I did NOT get the COOLWWWSEARCH until AFTER I updated SPYBOT yesterday evening. I also did as you suggested and deleted the items from HiJack This log files. I also d/loaded and run smartkiller.exc and it showed no infection either.

Thanks,

Please stick to one thread. These threads have been merged

Just curious, can you repair it with Spybot?

And you haven't posted a log from Hijack This. ;)
auntminna
NO! Spybot cannot clean this, it suggests that some files are still in use and run Spybot at start up, which I have have done again and again.....

Sorry, will post HiJack log file in a few. On dial up, so takes a few get back on here.

Thanks!

Bobbi Flekman
Hi auntminna,

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

I think that the false positive can be ignored. Another thought, a new release of Spybot has become available. Are you updated? If not, goto this linkhttp://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html and update Spybot.
See if it still comes up.
auntminna
Hey~Bobbi,

Good to hear I have clean logs! And, I am protected with all the above mentioned for spyware and viruses. I also know that AVG is coming out w/ a new version end this year, so I will be getting the latest as soon as it is released.

Thanks for the help!

auntminna
