I run AVG free on my machine. Two days ago I got a message that a trojan was identified on my system. I've run AVG several times and it locates three files, but it cannot remove them to the virus vault.

You need to get to download AVG7 Free version when it is available as the other version will no longer give you any protection after 31st December 2004.

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:

• Active Alert
• Internet Optimizer

and click "Remove" for each of them.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Thank you for your info.

The trojan I've been dealing with has been the dyfica.2.

After I posted, I ran the computer in safe mode and found I couldn't run AVG, so I rebooted and ran AVG again. It found 3 infected files, which this time it allowed me to quarantine. I downloaded and ran adaware. (Thought I had already installed it, but that must have been last month before I re-formatted my hard drive.) It removed many questionable things.

As a result, Active Alert and Internet Optimizer were not in the list of programs installed on the system when I opened the control panel.

I removed:

O2 - BHO: ADP UrlCatcher Class - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll

and

O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://public.windupdates.com/get_file.php...d693e854e5c9a60

But the others didn't seem to be on the system.

During this time, I got the nasty warning that the trojan was in a temp folder. I went in the folder and deleted everything there, but it kept saying it was there. I started to run AVG 6 and it discovered an infected file, but I stopped it to get the upgraded AVG. I downloaded and installed AVG 7.0 free and then ran it. AVG 7 didn't find anything wrong with the system.

We'll see if that's really the case.

Thanks again for your help. I ran Hijackthis and deleted the two entries you suggested. I started up in Safe Mode and searched for msbe.dll. It wasn't in the System32 folder you suggested, so I searched the entire drive for the file. It wasn't there. The other folder, Windows TaskAd was there and was deleted. This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2
