I've used Spybot, Adaware, and Norton 2004 over and over. I have disabled system restore, run the anti-spyware in safe mode and it appeared clean for a while and then showed back up. This all occured after a computer crash and I had to reinstall XP but forgot to get the security patches until it was too late. I have them now. Can you please help me get rid of this polall1r? Here is my scan:

CalamityJane
mra019,

I'm going over your log now. It's going to take me a few minutes to write it all up.

What version of Adaware are you using (look on the main screen, bottom right corner for program version). And what is the latest reference (update) file you are showing for that?
CalamityJane
Make a copy of these instructions so you have them handy as the next steps need to be done with IE closed.

Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"

Next, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

I missed one.

Close all open program and IE.

Scan with HijackThis and checkmark this item:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CSV10P70] C:\Program Files\CSBB\CSv10P070.exe
-CSV10P70 (CSv10P070.exe)

Press *fix checked* and exit.

Reboot and delete the folder:

C:\Program Files\CSBB

I need to know what version of Adaware you have. If it is not the SE ver. 1.05 then you need to get the newer version. I suspect you have the old version because it should have gotten some of those nasties that are in your log.

The last update was SE 1R24 29.12.2004

Please let me know if you version and update matches what is in this screen shot.
mra019
My adaware appears to be identical, I checked for updates, there are none available. I could not find program files CSBB after reboot. Here is the latest scan:

I did a search for Polall, it is still there...don't know if what we've done so far was supposed to ditch it or not. I really, really appreciate the help.
CalamityJane
It is not showing up on your HijackThis log. What is polall1r? A file? An Icon? Something in Task Manager?
mra019
My anti-spyware identifies it and then cannot get rid of it. When I try to do it manually it does not allow it. The full name is Polall1r.exe, it is in a file cabinet icon, something I've never seen before. It seems to download adware on whatever type of site you visit, if I'm looking up spyware removal software it pops up ads for that, if I'm looking at sports sites, I get sports gambling and -- Look for another playground -- ads that never popped up before this thing infected me.
CalamityJane
Thank you.

I need to see the log from your AV. I'm looking for the exact location of the file (full path)
mra019
I'm scanning now, not sure exactly what to send you. Should there be a report produced that I can copy and send?
CalamityJane
Ok, I see that this is what Adaware detects as "Booked Space" I really need for you to open Adaware, look in the bottom right corner...tell me what version of the program you see listed there. Then copy and post here what the latest reference file is (also on the main screen).

It could be you need a plug-in...but I need to know what program version of Adaware you have is.
CalamityJane
Rats! You have Norton. I don't think Norton can remove this FYI...We need to concentrate on Adaware and finding out what version you have so I can recommend some special tools.
mra019
AVG is still scanning but lists:

polall1r.exe Trojan Horse Downloader agent. AS

C:Documents and settings\Abram Family\Local settings\Temp\TH12544.tmp\polall1r...
mra019
Ad-Aware SE Personal, Build 1.05

Definitions file SE1R24 29.12.2004 Loaded

Help any?
mra019
I am running an Adaware scan now as well as the AVG. Norton shows nothing, it doesn't seem to do a very good job with Adware/Spyware. Ill show you results when I get them. Thanks for your patience Jane.
CalamityJane
Ah great!

To get rid of that file. When you are done, do copy anything else it finds and post it here.

Then, reboot into safe mode. Delete this folder:

C:Documents and settings\Abram Family\Local settings\Temp\TH12544.tmp

Then, stay in safe mode. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr

Windows will scan your system for files to free up disk space. At the end of the scan you will see a list. Make sure these three are checkmarked:

I have not deleted any files yet, does this help at all?
CalamityJane
Yes, that helps a lot. Let Adaware remove all the critical objects found.

Reboot and follow my instructions just above your last post.

Then let me know if it is gone
mra019
We did it! THANK YOU! Polall is history. You did great!

Now some final cleanup....and some prevention tips

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

How to Stop Hijackers & Spyware Infections, And other malware too!
http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 1.2.1 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer

You might also consider an alternative browser and use IE only when needed for sites that require ActiveX and are trusted (like Windows update or the online virus scanners). I use Firefox for 99% of my everyday surfing (using it right now in fact). It's free and very easy to setup, understand and use without many of the vulnerabilities that IE has. Or feel free to search around for info on other alternative browsers.
