Nothing active showing in your log. THere is one service that is suspect, but it shows as file missing.

Check the following items in HijackThis.

O16 - DPF: {33564D57-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71} -

O23 - Service: APNZL - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\BACKOF~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\APNZL.exe (file missing)

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.
Paddy Irishman
Thanks, I followed your steps and here is the new log. There is another 'file missing' entry 3rd from bottom on the log file. Should that be removed?

I am only after noticing that one of the two original entries that you instructed me to remove is back on the 2nd logfile. (Under 016 heading)

Was I supposed to use Hijack This in safe mode to remove that entry or is it being persistent?

I will go ahead and run it again, remove the extra entry and try to remove that older one too (again).
Paddy Irishman
I did some looking up on that first entry you asked me to remove and found out that my Spybot is blocking its removal as it is marked as legitimate. It gives me nothing further about it though. (No company, software etc)

OK, that's clean now (except for that one O16 entry)

I checked the O16 entry and it is not on any "bad" list that I can review. I suspect that Windows Defender may have brought it back. You can boot into Safe Mode and delete it.

Also, before deleting, you can use to Tools -> Manage Addons in Internet Explorer and disable it there, if you can identify it.
Paddy Irishman
Thanks again, I did as you instructed, but that Active X control is back on my system. Spybot marks it as legitimate; however, it gives me no information on it, such as: who it is by etc. I could not identify it in the add-ons section of my IE control panel, so I removed it using Spybot, to no avail.

It is probably ActiveX module that is being reset by a system process. Lets see if we can get more info on it.

Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{33564D57-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}"
start notepad.exe reginfo.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.

Hi!

I did as you asked, but there does not seem to any information to be garnered using the command you gave me.

I get the following warning before opening notepad, "Cannot find the reginfo.txt file. Do you want to create a new file?" If I click 'yes' I get a blank file. If I click 'No' notepad closes.
LoPhatPhuud
The regsitry entry is not there. WHen that happens the file is not created. No problem, except there is no information on that ActiveX control. It is most likely safe to ignore. Nothing I can find has any negative comments regarding that CLSID. I'll continue to research it and post if I find anything.

OK, found out what it is...

Thanks!

I don't mean to sound pushy, but now that I have ruled out something malicious being on my system, is there somewhere on this site that helps out the inexplicable crashes/shutdowns that I am having?

I am guessing here?
LoPhatPhuud
I can think of three places, our OS forum which you ahve already found, Broadband Reports Microsoft Forum, and Microsoft's newsgroup for Windows XP.

BBR = http://www.dslreports.com/forums/3

MS = http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertz...ng=en&cr=US
