My WinXP laptop acquired a virus - I think from trying to install a codec. I ran Adaware and Spybot, and lastly Norton Antivirus, until nothing further was reported, but on rebooting I still get a flashing icon in the system tray which pops up a "Critical System Error" balloon message telling me I have virus, and should click on the ballon to get a list of prodcucts that will fix it. I am reluctant to do this as I suspect it will take me somewhere nasty and compound the problem!

SpywareQuake/SpyFalcon/Smitfraud Removal

Note: These instructions are only for Windows 2000, XP Home, XP Pro, & 2003.

The following steps may not clean all of it, but should be a good start and will restore the desktop to default at least so you can proceed with complete removal using various tools.

1. Print out or save to notepad these instructions as we will need to do most steps offline and in SAFE MODE (so you won't have this window open to see the instruction from)

2. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

3. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

4. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.

5. Now please scan with HijackThis to produce a log. Post that log in a new topic along with the Ewido log you saved earlier and the Panda report. We will also need the log from Smitrem: The tool will create a log named rapport/txte in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your new topic. Logs needed in your post are:

Thanks for the quick reply.

I was a little confused by the instructions, i.e. do you want the rapport log from before as well as after running the 'clean' action - becasue the later overwrites the former, but I have included both anyway. Also, in instruciton 5 what are the "the Ewido log you saved earlier and the Panda report. We will also need the log from Smitrem"? - although I guess from the last part of the instructions you don't want them in this case.

So in the following order I have included the Rapport log from before and after the Clean ation, and then the final Hijackthis log.

The "Critical Error Message" I was suffering from has disapopeared after these actions by the way, but I guiess if you can tell me anything else that needs doing to finalise the tidy-up, that would be good.

Sorry for the confusion. Those instructions are being modified and I missed cleaning out the reference to Ewido. THe logs you posted are the ones needed. One item of cleanup left and a check to be sure nothing else is hiding.


First:
Run HiJackThis and press the Scan' button

When the scan is finished:
Check the following items in HijackThis.
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02) -

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.


Second:
Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'Yes' to exclude them.

If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
The logfile is named 'Startup Programs' by default and will be located where the program is.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer. This includes SP1 and SP2 if you use Windows XP. The first defense against infection is a properly patched Operating System.

11. Alternate Browser
Consider using an alternate browser as your default. I recommend and use Firefox as my primary browser. It is still necessary to keep Internet Explorer current and protected in order to use Windows Update.

With regard to my system now being clean, for your interest when I re-ran my antivirus software at the end it showed up some Trojan horses in the system restore files taken automatically on dates during the several days it took to sort all this all out with you. I have simply deleted the relevant folders from C:/System Volume Information.

My machine appears to be bug free and functioning well except for a new performances symptom as follows. I use the machine on a home wireless network to connect to the internet. I have set up IE and Eudora to share a common IE Favourites and Eudora Message Stores respectively on another machine. The performance in connecting to these files wirelessly has fallen catastrophically after the cleanup process of the last few days (even though Windows Explorer performance over the same link is OK, and performance over the shared internet connection is generally OK). But unless this rings any bells with you I won’t trouble you with it, and will sign off with my thanks again.

Deleting folders from System Restore only serves to invalidate the restore process. Best is to completely reset it. Item #7 of my list of suggestion recommends it. Here is the complete instruction:


Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
