Lately, my comp has been running really slow. Some programs stop in the middle of running. I was wondering if you find anything odd in my hijackthis

Hi Anika,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Here is the new Hijackthis log. Oh, and I was wondering if you had any ideas as to why windows xp service pack 2 will not install on my computer. It tells me "cannot read from or write to the disk". I even ordered the CD-ROM thinking it was just the website but it still tells me the same thing. Thank you so much for helping me.

Sounds strange. As for now I have no idea why that would be. Can you tell me more about it? What eactly happens when you insert the CD? The exact message and the time it says it may clue me in.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Welcome back. I hope the weather clears up some for ya. As for the sp2 issue, I seem to have fixed it. I deleted what I had already downloaded and re did it. It worked. Here is my new HJT log. Again, thank you for helping me.

Apparently it didn't work... When I was here I could get to all the logs that were handled by me, until I came on to yours. The subsequent loading didn't give a result in 45 minutes, so I concluded the server went belly up again...

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

There is freeze, and there is freeze... How long did you wait? It could be that the machine was busy working on the file. I do know that hscsp_p3.cab is ok. It is a part of Windows. Have you tried the scan in Safe Mode or in Normal Mode? Can you try in Safe Mode?

Grrrr... Can you uninstall Ad-Aware, reboot and reinstall it? Is it then still hanging? If need be you can simply delete the .cab file as it is a temporary storage space for Windows Updates, but I don't like to delete something from there... I've done it though with other insecure versions of programs, like older versions of Outlook Express that got downloaded. How do other programs react to the file? Do you use Spybot? Online scans from Panda? Your own Anti-virus? If it really were bad it would try to kill other scanners too.

It still freezes :( Ad-Aware is the only program that I know of that sticks on that file. It only sticks when I do a "full" scan and not a "smart" scan. I use Spybot and TrendMicro Anti virus. Scan disk still freezes on "compress old files" as well.

I think my computer is getting me back for thinking about replacing it. =)

I doubt something is wrong with the file, but just to be sure can you do the following: Go to Online malware scan and submit that .cab file.

Tell me the result.

Also to rule out that there still is something lurking under the radar. Download GMER from http://www.gmer.net. Extract the program to your desktop and doubleclick to start it. Click on the "Rootkit" tab and make sure that "Show all" is unchecked and click on "Scan" to start the process. After it is done click on " Copy" and paste the contents in a new post.

Many malwares are trying to get the server off the air as it is so effective, so if there is a problem with the download I'll devise another way of getting it to you.

I think it is just too big. An 8mb word document is bound to cause headaches. I tried to Email it to myself so if you wanted it that way I would have it if I was at work since our time difference is way off and it wouldn't even upload. I can send it to you in pieces on here.. so it is not so much for you to look at all at once. I am up for sugestions.

You could make it smaller by copying it to a "Compressed folder". Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file. Right click on and choose "Send To" from the menu. Then choose "Compressed Folder" and it will create a so called .zip-file that you can attach either to a post here or an email message.

Does that work? If not, how big is it then?

Well... That was easy. After deleting all the entries regarding Winzip I had a nice short log. There's nothing wrong in it.

by the way, by saving it as a text file you could have gotten a a much smaller file, as after converting it the file was only 4 MB. That's half smaller ;)

If so, we can try something else. It has the possibility to create a log, even though that will be huge, but as the computer freezes I don't think it will produce a log...

Extract it, and run it. Click "Edit", "Auto Scroll", and after that "File", "Capture Events" if it isn't capturing them already. Run the disc cleanup and see what is at the bottom of the screen when it freezes. Can you tell me that?

Sorry it has taken me so long. I had my god kids and one had the flu (which I think I am getting now) and I didn't have time to post until today. It doesn't stop moving long enough to see if it says anything. Nor do I really know what I am looking for.../sigh the blond is getting to my brain. Can you give me an example as to what I am looking for? I notice most of the MSN things on it say something about not found. the disk cleanup say success but the status bar never moves... Should I turn off MSN and avg? they seem to be the ones that scroll faster then I can read...

It looks good. If you still see it moving along while you think it has frozen, it means it did not freeze, but is actually still doing something. You can turn off MSN, I wouldn't with AVG. But that would mean that your computer is different from the "normal" way it is. Ergo the freeze may not occurr at all. On the other hand, it might also solve the problem, as AVG and MSN might have been fighting... Who knows. Until I know the culprit, it is a guessing game for me too.

And don't worry about being away. This is a thing that is quite difficult to check out, so I didn't expect you back for a week. When you get back, I'm here.

Ok, well I tried Disk Cleanup just for the hell of it and it worked. I don't know what happened between then and now but it works now. I think Ad-Aware still freezes but I will try it again too.

Good to hear. As I said, it all looks good :) AdAware and AVG might be fighting amongst each other though. So if you can note the thing it seems to be stuck on, it might help.

Ad-Aware still gets stuck on the .cab file. I left it go wen I went out to do running around and it was still on it when I came back. I was gone a few hours, so I know it wasnt just thinking. Everything else works fine now. I know I got AVG after Ad-Aware started messing up. My boyfriend had me get it after I sent in my HJT log.

can you delete that .cab file? See if it hangs somewhere else. Be aware that I don't tell you to delete other files, just that hscsp_p3.cab-one.

Apperantly it was not just the .cab file. Now it is stuck on the windows\softwaredistribution\download\9ded4ee34a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e\ic folder. I have put the .cab file back in it.

Click on Start, Run... and type chkdsk c: /f. It might be that you will have to reboot for it. Does the scanning still freeze at that point?

I did that scan you asked chkdsk c: /f I have not tried ad-aware yet. I have noticed my comp restarts slower and slower these days and that i have about 11 processes running that take up at least 10,000k mem usage EACH! Half of the stuff is my stupid anti virus the other half i have no idea what it belongs too. can you help me sort this out? will programs set to start at startup slow the initial starting of the comp? I am trying to keep this comp alive for about 6 more months until I have the money for a new one so any advice would be wonderful. THank you so much for all you have done so far to help me.

Can you post a new log from HijackThis? That way I can see what is being started. Did the Chkdsk find something? Does AdAwre run again? Or does it still freeze? How much memory do you have?

Yes, Ad-Aware still freezes, I am not sure if Chkdsk found anything. It did say it fixed something in windows but it all ran by too fast to see anything. Is there anything I can do to make it so I can check. I have 1gig ram atm. All of the trendmicro processes seem to be the ones taking up all my mem useage. I know that Tmproxy is over 60,000k

I think that it has become out of my hands... I don't have enough knowledge of Lavasoft's Ad Aware to be able to help further. I think it is best to go to their forums and ask them.

1 GB should be enough though.
