Got landed with this download disguised as a realplayer update showing as mediatubecodec.exe. Task Manager is now locked, desktop replaced with a hyperlink picture to some download, can only access My Computer/Documents etc through Windows Explorer rather than directly accessing. Internet Explorer is coming up with nonstop links and has numerous addons for "virus scans" which are part of it. Popups every 5 minutes claiming to be from Windows Security Alert prompting more downloads. Me getting slightly frustrated. If Anyone knows of any possible solution please help! Add Adware threw up 46 spywares which have been deleted now, Norton cannot find anything wrong after a full system scan.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Hello,

Exactly what I needed to see, thanks.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background. So only run it once!

1. Download this file - combofix.exe

Yeah all seemed to be ok after I ran that popups, desktop etc were gone, but the first time I restarted it was the same thing again :(

O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - file:///C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

* Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again.

After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
