Full Version: Virus Disabled my Anti-virus software?
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
cremators-inc
Hi guys,

I use a symantec anti-virus corporate edition on my desktop. My computer has beem infected by the virus bloodhound.packed.jmp ,although my anti-virus claims it can be removed, whenever it tries to clean it or remove it, my AV stops functioning! My AV currently has the infected files in quarantine but is unable to delete them.

So should i reinstall my AV to ensure it works properly again? If i do this will it enable the virus to freely propagate throughout my computer? By re-installing My AV, will i be rid of the virus as the infected files(currently quarantined)will also be removed?

I am unable to run manual or any other form of scans with my AV. My computer except for my AV is unaffected.

As you may have deduced, im a novice with computers ;(

Any and all advice would be appreciated!thanks!
LoPhatPhuud
Click Here to download the current version of HiJackThis.
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Open Notepad > Click on Format > Uncheck Word wrap, if checked.
  • Double-click on the desktop icon for HJTINstall.exe.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and HijackThis (HJT) will launch.
  • Close any/all browsers, messenger, mediaplayer, Office and mail client windows and applications.
  • Click on the 'Scan' button. When the scan is finished, press the 'Save' button. HiJackThis will open a Notepad document with scan in it. Save the log to your Desktop for ease in locating it.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the contents of the log to your clipboard.
  • Come back here to this thread, right click your mouse and select Paste to paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
  • Make certain your post shows the entire log, please.

This is what you expected right LoPhatPhood? Thanks a lot for helping me out btw
LoPhatPhuud
There is an infected file showing in your log. After removal, check your AV again and let me know the result.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Press the 'Scan' button and when done check the following items in HijackThis:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [amva] E:\WINDOWS\system32\amvo.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
E:\WINDOWS\system32\amvo.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread. (Be sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad)
LoPhatPhuud
I split the second computer to its own log. Too many chances for errors when doing more than one computer in teh same thread.

Did as you were told, but did not find any amvo.exe file in system32 folder to manually delete .AV still does not function.
LoPhatPhuud
The amvo file still shows in your HJT log. Try this... (I know it will remove Amvo)

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
