Full Version: Where'd my C drive go?
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
daveofficer
it's my own silly fault really. i was dabbling with torrents and my computer went nuts and now i've got some kind of virus/worm/trojan/combination of all which has hidden my C drive, disabled task manager and removed the programs from my start menu. it didn't factor in safe mode though the foolish infection that it is.

anyhoo, spybot, adaware and avg have failed to eradicate it and so i turn to you fine chaps.

have a log:

this lot means absolutely nothing to me as i'm a bit clueless when it comes to computers so any help greatly appreciated!
LoPhatPhuud
If you can, do the following. Hopefully this will get us to a point where we can continue in Normal mode.

First:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If using Windows Vista, be sure to "Run As Administrator")
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Second:

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

What do you guys think?
LoPhatPhuud
You mention runnig sdfix since it was recommended on another forum. Did you post the log there as well? If yes, may I have a link to the thread please.
daveofficer
no i didn't post a log. i just saw a post where someone had some success using sdfix for a similar sounding problem and figured it was worth a shot.

after running all these i still have 'virus alert' beside my clock, no access to my c drive or my cd/dvd drive and all the options from the right side of the start menu are gone. but the constant 'alerts' seem to have stopped and the 'all programs' menu has reappeared in the start menu.

is there anything else i should post regarding setup or anything i can do to make it easier for folks to work out the problem?

does it make a difference that the logs were produced when the computer was in safe mode as administrator login rather than the normal mode in my own profile? i don't have the same problems in safe mode that i'm seeing in normal mode so perhaps they're only active on certain profiles
LoPhatPhuud
Please don't run removal programs unless directed. You are making system changes and it may just muck up what I'm doing. If you ahve the log from SDFix, could you post that in this thread.

We'll also need a HJT log from the user account you normally log into, done in Normal Mode if possible. Most infections are installed for all users, but many also have entries for the current user when the computer was infected.

I also want to check one file:

Please submit the following file(s) to Jotti.org for analysis: http://virusscan.jotti.org/

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kqwvgqjb.ako

Be sure to post the results in this thread.

Your next post should include:
1. Info from Jotti
2. HJT Log from your normal user account
