The details for Handy Recovery 2.0
QUOTE
Handy Recovery™ is an easy-to-use data recovery software designed to restore files accidentally deleted from hard disks and floppy drives. The program can recover files damaged by virus attacks, power failures and software faults or files from deleted and formatted partitions. If some program does not use Recycle Bin when deleting files, Handy Recovery can restore such files. It can also recover files moved to Recycle Bin after it has been emptied.

With Handy Recovery you can browse the content of your disk like you do it in Windows Explorer. The only difference is that you see deleted files and folders along with the regular ones. The program can search for files by name or mask and show the probability of successful recovery for each file. Recovered files can be saved to any disks accessible on your system.

You can also restore the full branch of folders tree containing selected files and folders. Along with the main file data, the program can recover alternative data streams which are used on NTFS file system to store additional information about files.

Handy Recovery works under Win 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 operating systems. The program supports all Windows file systems for hard and floppy drives including FAT12/16/32 and NTFS/NTFS 5.

If you are looking for an easy to use yet powerful recovery tool, you have just found it. Download the 30-day trial version and see for yourself.

Handy Recovery is priced competitively at only $30 for a single user license. We provide flexible discount program for volume purchase orders. See Order section for more information. If you happen to have a problem or a question, free support is always available.

Important: Save yourself some trouble. If you already know the extension of the file(s) you want to get back, just rename all your CHK files to the desired extension and see what works. The programs here are for when you have way too many CHK files to test or when you have way too many different file extensions you want to recover.

So what is a CHK file? Well, any time a program or Windows crashes, any files that were open are not closed properly. Part of closing is writing all the file location information in all the right places. Without this info, Windows can't find all the parts of the file. When SCANDISK or CHKDISK is run, all the parts are identified as "lost file fragments" and converted (if you want) into CHK files. Face it. Stuff crashes all the time. If you only run SCANDISK once a month, you get a month's worth of old crash junk. If you were working on (and lost) something important just before a crash, you might want to try to recover any data from any CHK files that exist. On the other hand, if you aren't in a state of panic over lost data, just delete any CHK files. A handy tip: Keep your disk defragmented. That way if you ever do lose it all, the lost file fragments will be more likely to be complete files.

Welcome Competition! A nice guy named Martin Kratz wrote a utility to compete with my UnCHK program. Amazingly, he sent me the source code. So... I compiled it and am offering it here for your consideration. Now you have two open-source CHK file recovery programs to choose from!

Both programs need the Visual Basic 5 runtime files, which come pre-installed on Windows 2000 and newer. If you don't have them, you can get them from Microsoft or Ziff-Davis. I'll do a side-by-side comparison:

Restoration is an easy to use and straight forward tool to undelete files that were removed from the recycle bin or directly deleted from within Windows, and we were also able to recover photos from a Flash card that had been formatted. Upon start, you can scan for all files that may be recovered and also limit the results by entering a search term or extension. In addition, it also provides the option to wipe the found files beyond simple recovery. The program is small and standalone, it does not require installation and can also run from a Floppy disk. Restoration works with FAT and NTFS as well as digital cameras cards.

hi

hope this is not off topic, but how effective is say steganos shredder @ destroying disk data, will any of these utilities recover from them, i have tested floppys and it appears Stegganos can live up to their claims, but how effectice on an OS disk MFT , especially PX orP?

cheers

Hi mesclun.101

No your posting isn't off topic cause deleting data and data recovery are two parts which are close up together.

Deleting data a proper way means that a user has to make sure that he uses a good and effective method. Most offered programs do not use methods which had been developed by US-Military or -Government due to strikt restrictions.

IMHO private data should be removed by using a method of wiping a storage medium which writes a special patterns like 0 and 1 or other signs for many times.
I've tested this mentioned program (Handy Recovery) with a HDD being defragmentated and rewritten for many times. I could recover ~ 20% of the so called deleted datas. Trying the same with a HDD where the deleted data had been wiped of with writing different patterns for 15 times was little bit more difficult.

When you wanna be sure that all data of your storage devices will get removed totally you must put your devices in a magnetical field being stronger than 300 times of the Earth magnetic field... but I'm in doubt that a homeuser would have such equipment for home use ;)

VIA Open Source Software

The VIA PadLock Hardware Security Suite provides a platform approach to computer security, ensuring security performance working in concert with ground-breaking features integrated into VIA's next generation x86 processors.

VeXP is a VIA-enhanced Xine Player optimised for the CLE266 and CN400 chipsets.

1. The VIA PadLock Tru-Delete Utility

Do a search in Google for “complete delete file” or anything similar and you’ll find commercial software available for $29.95 or $49.95. The VIA PadLock Tru-Delete Utility is not only free, it’s open source and works under Linux, Windows 2k or XP and WinCE 4.2!

As Part of the VIA PadLock Security Initiative, VIA has developed the VIA PadLock Tru-Delete Utility to permanently remove sensitive data that has been previously deleted and help clean up free space on your hard drive.

The VIA PadLock Tru-Delete utility adopts the VIA PadLock RNG (Random Number Generator), embedded in VIA processors based on the C5P and C5XL Nehemiah cores to enable users to completely wipe unwanted or sensitive files or partitions on their systems. By utilizing the VIA PadLock RNG, the VIA PadLock Tru-Delete Utility helps to reduce CPU utilization during random number generation, leaving system resources to continue with other tasks such as digital entertainment or productivity applications.

This utility will run on any recent PC, however, PCs not equipped with a C5P or C5XL Nehemiah core processor from VIA will perform random number generation in software and not be able to take advantage of the VIA PadLock RNG to enhance performance. Therefore, when using the utility with the latest VIA C3™, VIA Eden™ or VIA Antaur™ processors, users can benefit from increased overall system performance when wiping stored data. Additional to the utility, VIA provides the source code for free, thereby enabling third party software developers to integrate the utility or use it as a foundation to build on as they create customized and more feature rich versions. For more information regarding the VIA PadLock RNG, please visit the VIA PadLock Hardware Security Suite website.

R-Linux is a free file recovery utility for the Ext2FS file system used in the Linux OS and several Unixes. R-Linux uses InteligentScan technology and flexible parameter settings that give you real control over the fastest data recovery ever seen. It recovers files from existing logical disks even when file records are lost. However, there is no any network capabilities or ability to reconstruct damaged RAIDs or stripe sets in R-Linux.

R-Linux features
    *  Standard "Windows Explorer" - style interface.
    * Host OS: Win9x, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003.
    * Supported file systems: Ext2FS (Linux) only.
    * Recognition and parsing Dynamic (Windows 2000/XP), Basic and BSD (UNIX) partitions layout schema.
    * Creates IMAGE FILES for an entire DISK, PARTITION or its part. Such image files can be processed like regular disks.
    * Recognizes localized names.
    * Recovered files can be saved on any (including network) disks accessible by the host operating system.

R-Linux recover files:
    *  Removed by virus attack, power failure or system crash;
    * After the partition with the files was reformatted, even for different file system;
    * When the partition structure on a disk was changed or damaged. In this case, R-Linux can scan the disk trying to find previously existed partitions and restore files from found partitions.
    * From disks with bad sectors. In this case, R-Linux can first copy the entire disk or its part into an image file and then process such image file. This is especially useful when new bad sectors are constantly appearing on the disk, and remaining information must be immediately saved.

Hi Georgie

Sure a recovery tool like that mentioned one does recover ALL kind of files, cause that's what it was made for. The only problem could be that the sectors of your HDD is in use of other files, depends how much this sectors had been "overwritten" with other information. All tools will give ya a feedback if files can get recovered successfully. To find this out you have to try a data recovery.

I would also add don't install these tools on the hdd your trying to recover from as you may overwrite the files your trying to recover. The best policy is remove the hdd and connect it to a different computer or boot using something like UltimateBootCD 4 windows which has most of the freeware tools listed here on it.

Again don't recover files to the drive/partition you are search save if you can to a external source whether usb hdd or flash drive or floppy.
