When you download a message with live HTML tags, the tags reference an image stored on the sender's computer (owned, for example, by a telemarketer, a hacker, etc). Since the embedded location link is unique to your message, the sender can find out if you've received the message, if and how many times you've read it. The sender can even determine your IP address. Spammers use this tactic to verify "live" addresses in their database so they can send you more junk mail or sell your address. Even if you delete or block the email, they know you're there.
