2.1 Why should I do it?
If you do not keep your OS up to date you are most likely to be vunerable to security exploits or attacks. Those updates also combat compatability issues, which stops your system crashing.
2.2 Updating Windows
To update windows visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. It may ask you to install an Active X control. If so you should see this alert appear below your addressbar.
Click on this and allow it to install.
You should then see this screen. If you press the 'Express' button then it will install all the critical updates.
3.3 Updating Linux
Most version of Linux have update software built in, however some flavours, like RedHat Linux have special update pages.
