what now?
CalamityJane
Hi littleleigh,

Do you use Kazaa? That comes bundled with spyware and is part of why you are having problems. What AVG is detecting is spyware (calling it a trojan).

1. First uninstall the Kazaa program and we'll be happy to recommend something else spywarefree if you need, just ask.

2. Next, you need to get this free program which is a spyware remover.

Be sure to UPDATE BEFORE SCANNING FIRST!! That is a very important step and I have included easy directions.

Download Adaware (get the free edition)
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
(choose download from the lefthand menu)

Go to: Select Full Install and choose the download location of your choice (1.7mb)
Choose Download from
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306 <--(I found FileForum easiest)

After download and installing first, please update the program. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen.

Next, go to Settings (the gear icon at the top) and then *Scanning* and checkmark these items so they will be green:

Scan within archives
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLS
Scan my hosts file

Then click *proceed* to save settings.

Click on *Tweak* next. And checkmark to make these green also:

Automatically mark all objects in result list

Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click on *proceed*

Next, from the main screen, click on *Start* (lower righthand corner) and put a dot in the box next to *use Custom scanning options*, then click *Next* to start your scan.

Checkmark any items found after scanning to remove (this will actually put them in quarantine and can recover from backup if any should not be removed).

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

3. Finally, scan your PC once more with HijackThis so we can tackle any items that remain (if any). There will probably be more to do
littleleigh
thanks for your reply

ok, did all that (except for checking the automatically mark all objects in result list because it wouldn't let me check it), and did the scan, showing 28 files that were removed. rebooted and scanned again and it was clean.

also ran avg after getting a clear scan with tha other tool, and it said there was no virus detected.
CalamityJane
Hi littleleigh, good job. Your log looks good.

You have one item that need fixing. (Did you have the Blaster worm - variant G, at one time?) Might be a good idea to follow the link I have under that entry and get the removal tool and run it just in case there are any other remnants of it left in your system.

Meanwhile - lets fix the orphaned items and that registry entry with HijackThis

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

hi, thanks so much for your help so far, you've been great and i even understand what your telling me to do :thumb:

ok, did all the thngs you told me to do, yes i has the lovsan worm some time ago, but used Stinger to get rid of it. i followed the link you gave about getting rid of it and it's remnants, but nothing was relevant to me in that the files etc it tells you to delete weren't there so i assme the Stinger did that.

Here is the latest log file, hopefully everything is fixed now.

You're quite welcome - we are really glad we could help ahah.gif

Glad you found the instructions easy to follow, too!

You log looks clean :victory:

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
