Are they both supposed to go on the internet at the same time? THX
They seem to do that on Win ME at times, but not on the other OS..What version do you have?
Basically IE is for the Internet for browsing and the Windows Explorer is to "browse" or search your Harddrive and your OS internally..but there are times that it could go out of the box.
Do you think you have a specific issue ?

I was curious if IE is for webbrowsing only and the Explorer for "browsing" the entired drives in my computer.
Well, when entering an URL in the address line of the Explorer it opens that website behind the URL:

But that makes sense cause IE and Explorer are combined. Remember that Anti-Trust stuff Microsoft was asked to remove that binding between IE and the Explorer?

I guess we can say that there is not much difference between IE and WE... I remember when kids at school used to use that WE..

Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer
There has been much discussion regarding Windows Explorer trying to access the Internet rather than Internet Explorer. This problem is now solvable. ZoneAlarms provides a solution at http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/supp...FAQ.jsp#2issues. Problem is if you have IE 5.01 or higher then this solution is no good. However, MS provides sort of a solution at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;240928. If you have more than 32 Megs of RAM, then WE and IE are supposed to be opened as separate windows. It's supposed to be automatic. This is wrong. I have 128 Megs and this isn't working, and others are having this same problem, too.
Solution: You have to make a simple little change to the System Registry File.
First, open the Registry Editor. If you don't know how to do that, then click on Start, Run, and type in Regedit and then click OK. This is the Registry Editor. Click on the little plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, scroll on down until you find Software and click on the + for that, then click on the + for Software, then the + for Microsoft, then the + for Windows, then the + for CurrentVersion, then the + for Explorer.
Underneath Explorer there should be the entry for BrowseNewProcess. If you have that entry, then see below on what to do next. If you don't have that entry, then click on Explorer, then click on Edit, New, Key. In the box provided, enter BrowseNewProcess exactly as I have typed it. No spaces. Then press the Enter Key. Now, double click on that entry -- BrowseNewProcess, then click on Edit, New, String Value. In the first line type BrowseNewProcess, and in the bottom line enter the word YES, then hit the Enter Key or click OK. (See last paragraph)
If you already have the folder BrowseNewProcess, click on it, and in the right hand pane, you have BrowseNewProcess and the Data is NO, then double click on the BrowseNewProcess in the right hand pane. Change the NO to YES and hit the Enter Key or click OK. See the last paragraph on what to do next.

Last Paragraph: Now repeat the process for HKEY_CURRENT_USER. After you've done all that close the Editor, and Reboot your computer. You should now have Windows Explorer on its own and Internet Explorer should be on its own too.

Now when you finally get and install SP2 for WinXP and have zone alarm.. then you will see WE wanting again to get out of the box :)

Windows XP SP2 will deal with a lot of security issues:
1) It will automatically activate the built in Windows Firewall [1].
2) It will take Auto Update a step further by simply getting the needed security patches all by itself without waiting on you to go get them.
3) Adds a pop-up killer to Internet Explorer.
4) Forces all websites to display in a normal fashion [2] to prevent newbies being tricked by tiny little pages overlaying and concealing harmful activities not to mention those annoying full screen porn pop ups that have no apparent way to escape [3] will now be forced to give you all the usual buttons and menus.
5) There will be many other tweaks as well and be aware that this is the first security update that Microsoft has decided to "bite the bullet" and subtract from user-friendliness to provide better security
6) Your AntiVirius will have to be updated to work with Windows XP SP2, although Microsoft has told all of the AV companies what needs to be done to get the two working together again. Besides, your AV software should be updated at least every week anyways, if not everyday.

Having installed Zone Alarm's software firewall, be warned that after you reboot, after installing XP SP2, and then go online, you will be hit with "twelve thousand" little pop-up dialog box warnings warning you that "program name" is trying to access the Internet, which likely will start to drive you crazy. The good news is you only have to deal with that once, if you check the box that grants permeate access to the Internet. After the first hour or so you will rarely see them and eventually weeks or months will go by before you see another warning and then only after you install a patch or new software. Be careful when dealing with the flood of warning though, a worm or Trojan may be amongst the various programs wanting access to the Internet. Carefully read the name of the program and/or the location of the file before you grant access. To make life a little easier I will give you a list of some of the programs I have given access to the Internet:
Adobe Reader 6.0 - Adobe Acrobat checking for updates. Auto Post 2000 - PowerPost 2000 - A Usenet binary uploader. Generic Host Process - svchost.exe - A Windows program that talks with your ISP's computer. Internet Explorer - iexplore.exe - Even if you use mozilla, Windows still needs IE to access the Internet. LiveUpdate Engine - lucomserver.exe - Norton AntiVirius' updater. Norton AntiVirius Alert Service - alertsvc.exe - a NAV thingie. ^^;;; Outlook Express - msimn.exe - Formerly (M)icro(S)oft (I)nternet (M)ail and
(N)ews. Windows Media Player - wmplayer.exe Microsoft Windows Media Configuration Utility - setup_wm.exe - WMP's updater. NewsbinPro - nbpro.exe - A Usenet binary downloader. Encarta 200x - encarta.exe - updater. WS_FTP 95 - FTP downloader. Thank you both for your answers. I don't know much about computers and am trying to learn. :blink: I have Win6sp1 and Win XP home. I noticed they were both running inZA free. I have now set WE to ask for permission and it hasn't done so. On my Win Me (old computer) I had it blocked, and the computer ran ok. I just wonder if WE on the net isn't a "call home" app. I noticed when I disconected from the net last nite WE stayed active in ZA after WI shut down. The bottom line to all this is I just want to stay safe and not get any "nasties"

Sure that happens when the automatic update function of XP HE or XP Pro is still enabled. And in fact that WE and IE are acting like "twins" you will see any tries for establishing "home-connections".
Perhaps you've heard about the latest discussions about compromised MS ISS webservers and that IE users are the aim of this hackers. In our section Security News you'll find lot of articles refering to that theme.
The major thought for home users should be to keep the OS up-2-date the same way as for AM (Anti Malsoftware programs). Means you should keep your AV, AT prgram up-2-date too.
I'm using IE for the updates only. For regulary webbrowsing I use Opera 7.5x JAVA or a browser which uses the Mozilla engine. Perhaps you should think over to give a try to one of this non IE browsers.
Next step which is to think over to substitue Outlook Express (OE) with another email program like Eudora, TheBat!, Thunderbird cause OE uses the same program routines of the WE and IE.. and I guess you can follow my thoughts now.

Zone Alarm and Windows Explorer

When you right-click a folder and click "Search..." or while using the "Show Desktop" button in the Quick Launch bar, you may receive the following error message:
"There was a problem sending the command to the program"
This is caused by a setting in Zone Alarm. In ZoneAlarm program settings, allowing Windows Explorer to access the internet (or the Trusted Zone alone) solves the problem. You don't need to allow Windows Explorer act as Server, though.
If that does not help, reset the Zone Alarm settings to factory defaults and re-configure it again.
CAUTION: All customizations in ZoneAlarm will be lost
From the Overview Preferences tab and turn off the auto-start.
Reboot Windows into safe mode.
Open the folder named Internet Logs (do a file/folder search).
Delete everything in that folder and empty the Recycle Bin.
Restart Windows normally
Restart ZoneAlarm manually and re-enable the Autostart.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: I could repro the problem with the latest version of EZ Firewall (powered by ZoneAlarm). Windows Explorer just tries toaccess the local PC( this is you :) ) IP address (127.0.0.1:port xxxx) or (0.0.0.0:port xxxx). Therefore, rather than allowing Windows Explorer global access to the Internet, you may wish to add the local PC IP address, DNS address(es) and any other 'trusted' addresses to the "TRUSTED" zone and allow Windows Explorer access to the TRUSTED zones only. You may add 0.0.0.0 and 127.0.0.1 to the Trusted Zone and allow Windows Explorer access only to Trusted zone, but not the Internet Zone.

Whenever I start internet explorer Zone Alarm will ask if I want to grant Windows Explorer acess to the internet. The first time I clicked no and IE wouldn't work. When I select yes it will work, however when I click the more info button when I get an alert ZA will ask if I want to grant acess to Internet Explorer. Is this normal?
