TBMAvengerStuka
Hi,
I recently have been experiencing some problems with downloading something off the web. Before, whenever I would begin to download something, it would ask me where it should download the files to. Now, it starts to download any file to a temporary folder without any questioning. What's more is, once I would try to open the file after the download, it would say that the file is corrupt. This problem is present at every download attempt throughout the web. I have Windows XP, TrendMicro antivirus, and I have run AdAWARE, Spybot, WinPatrol, Hijack This, "CleanUp!", and SPyware Blater. I use the default SBC Yahoo browser.

How can I chang it back to asking me where to download the files to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

Heya and welcome TBMAvengerStuka

What kind of browser are you on? IMHO MS IE still asks you where to save a download and there's no checkbox for accepting a "default folder".

Please tell us some more details Wave.gif

I'm sorry if I might say some wrong things...its just that i'm not too computer literate when it coes to the internet. The browser is the SBC Yahoo brower, which i guess is a slightly altered Internet Explorer browser. If it helps to know, I tried downloading any file in Internet Explorer, and the problem is still present. It still downloads to what I think is the Temporary Internet Files folder. I'm sorry, but I don't know what "IMHO MS IE" means.

I was wondering if this could be a corrupt caching file by any chance, since I tried system resore and have recieved a message that 2 files by the name Au_Cache and dsound.dll had their names altered. Also, I called technical support, and they said that it could be a corrupt caching computer file. If that is the case, I think I could find a normal file from another computer and over-write the bad ones. Yet, I'm still sceptical. Customer Support told me that I should then try and re-install windows, but thats a last ditch effort for me.

Ask me anything else. Thnx
Hunter
IMHO MS IE means....."In my humble opinion Microsoft Internet Explorer"

Try this..Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >
Internet Options. Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
choose to delete all Offline content. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all ->
File > delete.

Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one.

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Empty the Recycle Bin.

This will result in your having to re-enter passwords at forums, banks, and the like.

A small price to pay if it gets rid of any bad guys.

Flush your restore points in ME and XP, by turning System Restore off and then back on.
This will create a fresh restore point.

Explained here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001111912274039

Also if you have sunjava installed it's cache should be cleared too.
> control panel java-plugin > cache tab > hit clear!
And make sure you have the latest version if you have sunjava.

Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
a. Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set/click the options as follows:
Download signed ActiveX controls > prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX controls > disable
Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe > disable
b. In your Restricted Sites Zone set everything that can be to "disable". Set anything that cannot be disabled to "prompt".
c. Never add any site to your Trusted Sites Zone.

Basic Maintenance

Basic Cleanup
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup

Defragmentation (this may take awhile)
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter

Add/Remove
Remove any programs that you currently do not use or will not use in the near future. If you are not sure about what programs to remove, then do not remove. To remove go to Control Panel>Add/Remove click on the program you want to remove and click Remove.

Most Update problems can be resolved by manually downloading the new pattern file from http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp and unpacking to your Pc-cillin folder on the hard-drive and restarting the computer.
Or MANAC.COM.au/Virus/Updater.html

ActiveUpdate Internal Error 24 means that PC-cillin encountered an error while decompressing these files.

To resolve the issue:

Step 1

Delete the contents of the following folders:

Note: These folders contain the temporary files downloaded during the update process. It is necessary to delete the temporary files so that the directory will be clean when the update files are downloaded.
\AU_Cache
\AU_Temp
\AU_Backup
\AU_Bin
\AUSrc.tmp
\temp

Reboot the computer and update again.

Step 2

Perform a manual update of the pattern file.

Initiate an update by clicking the update button. This should give a message saying that there is no update available. Observe the system until the next update.

Okay...so far, I've done all of the things above. Except the following files were not on my computer at all:

\AU_Bin
\AUSrc.tmp

So if I understand this correctly, I should wait until the next update from Trend Micro, but in the mean time, I should just be carefull of any changes or any possibly harmful sites? Am I still protected before the next update? Do the files obove have any significance since i couldn't find them? Is the downloading problem supposed to persist until the next update?

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND DILIGENCE. Hope to hear from u...
Hunter
No do not wait..either try to use the auto update now or do it manually for your Pc-cillin.

Are you still having problems downloading any type of file ? Also you can set you IE on the advanced tab to Not enable install on demand..and on the security tab for the Internet..have it at least set for medium or prompt for downloads.
Tbmavengerstuka
Dang, Still to no avail. I've tried everything-replacing files, deleting files, changeing all options, etc. I'm out of ideas. Maybe I should just backup my imoprtant files and re-install windows, that is, unless you may have any other ideas.

Thx
Hunter
Besides that yahoo browser..do you still have the orginal IE..did you try that one to see if it will download? Go inot that IE and make it your default browser and see if you can. Also depending on what version of IE you do have..you could trying going into add/ remove then Iternet Explorer and hit the remove button..then a small windown will come up and give you the opinion to repair it.

If you think that something else is causing the problem..you could post a hijackthis log.

Repair Internet Explorer 6
A number of XP users have reported situations with Internet Explorer 6 becoming corrupted and reporting a number of different errors. While there is certainly no guarantee, the two procedures listed below have restored functionality to IE6 for many users experiencing problems.

Note: Both methods listed require that the Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM be available.

Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.
Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Lots of needless answers to this...This sounds like its not asking you if you want to open from location or save as. This usually happens with certain file types..like only ZIP or only EXE...try file types and see which ones are saving to a temp folder. Now go to My Computer, Tools then Folder Options..now click file types...find the file types that keep saving to temp folders and click on one then click the Advanced tab at the bottom and you should see a box saying Confirm Open After Download if its unticked then thats the problem..tick this box now the file type will no longer save to temp folder and your probls will be gone....do this for all the other file types that do this and your all fixed
