Nvu isn't gone anywhere. Nvu's source code will be used in creating a new version of standalone Composer just like old mozilla composer's code was enhance to create Nvu.

Daniel Glazman and his team is working on a new Composer, an NVU2 but it will take its time.

Mozilla Composer is the free, open source, HTML editor and web authoring module of the Mozilla Application Suite, now Sea Monkey, It is used to create and to edit web pages, e-mail, and text documents easily. It is compatible with Microsoft Windows and Linux.

Composer is an easy-to-use, WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), graphical user interface (GUI), HTML editor. You also can view, write and edit HTML source code with Composer.

The relationship between NVU and KompoZer explained
(from the NVU forums)
QUOTE
Although NVU 1.0, released in June 2005, is the last official release that you will find on the official NVU download site, it isn't the newest or best version of the software.

An unofficial bugfix/update called KompoZer is available from http://www.kompozer.net/. Current version number is 0.77, released in July 2006. For various legal reasons it cannot carry the NVU name, but for all practical purposes it is the same program.

KompoZer is not a cure-all for all the bugs in NVU 1.0, but it does fix some of the major annoyances. For example, KompoZer does not clutter your html source with extra blank lines as NVU does. And CSS functionality is vastly improved.

If you use NVU 1.0 and it works for you, stick with it. But if you run into problems, give KompoZer a try and see if it helps. It can't hurt.

KompoZer is now available for free download from SourceForge.
Approximately 20,000 copies were downloaded in May 2007.

No release date is given for the next version of Composer in Sea Monkey.

Hello Wsyi Free; welcome to GSF; thanks for the news; we have some questions:

Is your site/forums with the blessing of Daniel Glazman and Disruptive Innovations?

Please give us some more information on who are the owners of your forums and
Composer? CompoZer?
Wysi Free
Sorry Chachazz, didn’t know you had a question.

“Is your site/forums with the blessing of Daniel Glazman and Disruptive Innovations?”

No. Nvu is a trademark of Linspire but is open source code. In framing our site and support forum we were careful about the trademark issue and attentive to the fact there are two WYSIWYG HTML editors used by our open source community.

“Please give us some more information on who are the owners of your forums and Composer? CompoZer?”

Because “WYSI free” there is really nothing to own. WYSI (What you see is) Free Web Authoring uses free, phpBB bulletin board software and free hosting to serve a community using free WYSIWYG web authoring software.

The founders of our forum were moderators of the Nvu support forum. When that forum fell into neglect from an administrative standpoint we created a new forum. We understand there is a limit to interest and sponsorship but did not want the community to scatter. We also wanted new users to be able to ask questions of when they get stumped.

Nvu and KompoZer HTML editors are still free downloads and easy to use as you have reported. Nvu was specifically designed for beginning authors with no experience – like me! Nvu drew from Mozilla Composer and Firefox code to make the cross-platform application. KompoZer straightened out some of Nvu's rough spots.

I have not followed the development of “Composer2” in the SeaMonkey project. My understanding is the new package will not be a continuation of Nvu-KompoZer code but a different approach entirely. Another unknown is when the project might be completed and whether it will be offered as a stand-alone or just in the suite. I have heard that Daniel enlisted Fabien Cazenave, creator of KompoZer, to work with him on the project. But, that report was October of last year. Both have been absent from the Nvu support forum since 2006.

When (and if) the new model comes out I’ll look at it. Until then KompoZer works for me especially if I use FireFTP, a free extension to Firefox to publish my pages. Publishing remains a problem with Nvu-KompoZer. Otherwise, they compete with FrontPage and will run on Vista. FrontPage is discontinued and won’t run on the new OS.

Thanks for asking.

KompoZer picked up where N|vu stopped by providing a bug fix version of the free, WYSIWYG HTML editor. A new version of KompoZer is released and the developer, Fabien Cazenave, suggests that more upgrades are coming.

The N|vu version, as discussed on this forum, was released in April 2005. N|vu development ceased at that time prompting Fabien Cazenave, who goes by Kaze, to release his bug fix version, KompoZer.

The new KompoZer release was announced July 23, 2007.

The KompoZer release is welcomed by the community but even more heartening is word that future improvements are planned. It is clear to us that Kaze has a vision for the KompoZer editor. Free downloads are available at SourceForge.

"I have good news for all of you using Nvu or Kompozer, all of you requesting a successor to Nvu, a new, more modern, more robust, more powerful editor companion to Firefox. I am immensely happy to announce that we found a new partner to give a descendance to Nvu. More news later, stay tuned, it's going to be exciting !"
