WHAT IS GNU/DOS?
GNU/DOS is a distribution of FreeDOS which includes the following:
-Several core FreeDOS packages
-The DJGPP development environment with many GNU programs
-The Arachne Web browser and e-mail client
-The OpenGEM graphical user interface with many GEM programs
-The vim editor for developers
-The MTXE screen saver
-GPL, GPL with DJGPP exceptions, vim, Artistic License, Jason Hood License, and LGPL licensed source code for all of the above
GNU/DOS is very well suited for:
-Web and e-mail (no Java or other "plugins") through a dial-up modem (not a "Winmodem") or Ethernet connection
-Classic DOS and console UNIX applications and games
-Development (using the GNU Compiler Collection)
-And more!
WARNING
GNU/DOS is not completely stable, because the software included with GNU/DOS is not completely stable. Programs designed for MS-DOS may not work properly. Also, software designed for UNIX may not compile perfectly with DJGPP or may require changes to the code.
GNU/DOS is also completely unsupported, as I have no time to support it. Use at your own risk! GNU/DOS users should have a basic knowledge of both DOS and UNIX.
ISN'T DOS DEAD?
It still is used, although very rarely. However, DOS is still the fastest home PC operating system around. This is why I intend to "modernize" DOS by combining it with the GNU utilities in the form of a distribution.
System Requirements:
-Intel 486DX or higher (or 386SX or higher with a math co-processor installed) (486DX recommended)
-Floppy Drive at drive A:
-Hard Disk with at least 20 MB free
-CD-ROM Drive (you will need your own driver on a separate floppy. An open-source IDE
CD-ROM driver which works in most setups is available at http://johnson.tmfc.net/freedos/ )
-16 MB RAM
-dd (Linux) or RAWWRITE (DOS/Windows) (to burn a boot floppy)
For additional hardware support, you will need to install DOS drivers. These can be found at the Web site of your computer or hardware manufacturer.
