Okay my latptop is slowing in speed dramatically. I have had it checked for viruses, spyware or any resource hogs. I have posted a HJT log and its been reported as clean. My CPU usage sometimes skyrockets but the task manager shows no processes taking a pirticularly large amount of CPU useage. My laptop sometimes gives the message it is overheating. The air intake/outake may be blocked or in some way obstructed. I think there is some kind of a dust build up around these vents, and i was wondering how to safely dismanlte and clean these areas, and if there are any other physical things that could be causing it to overheat. It is a dell Inspiron 9100. Also if anyone knows of any programs i can use to monitor core/ hardrive tempature as i think my hardrive may have a built in sensor/monitor. If you wish for any hardware details etc, just message me or post here.

Hi Nebon

Have you made sure that the fan opening at the bottom of your laptop is not covered with dust or dust deposits? I know fro Dell notebooks that this opening is wellknown to cause overheating problems.

Dell is known to cure nearly all problems with a BIOS update, so another problem might be an too old BIOS release. You can get the information about the current installed release in the BIOS startup screen or when entering the BIOS settings on page 1 (overview). You can find more details which BIOS release is the latest one launched from Dell at the website there.

You all have to do is to enter the S-TAG code (bottom of your notebook, or page 1 in the BIOS settings) in the support website. Follow the given instructions please.

To monitor parameters of your notebook, please check for Belarc Advisor, incl. Security

Besides, how much RAM is installed, what kind of CPU is in use and what OS is running?

I just used Berlarc Advisor quick. Here is a few of those things you asked for:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
1GB of RAM
3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache

I think thats about it. How do i find out what CPU i am using? Also I think it is the air ducts, i know it might sound simple but is there any specific instructions for cleaning them? Or things i need to be careful of?

My BIOS is Revision A05.

If you think it is dust..get a vaccuum cleaner..turn off that laptop..put the round end of the hose without the brush right over the opening when the fan is and suck out all the dust...the fan will even start spinning when you do that..

You may also want to run the hdd manufacturers diagnostic tool on the hdd. I had a dell at work that started to run slow and it was the hdd that was failing and needed replacing.

Oooo i dnt no that. Thanks very much stidyup.
