Gentoo Linux 2006.0
February 27, 2006

The Gentoo Release Engineering team proudly announces the release of Gentoo Linux 2006.0. Gentoo Linux 2006.0, the first release in the 2006 series, represents improvements across many architectures since the 2005.1 release.

Major highlights in the release include KDE 3.4.3, GNOME 2.12.2, XFCE 4.2.2, GCC 3.4.4 and a 2.6.15 kernel. This is also the first release with the Gentoo Linux Installer officially debuting on the x86 LiveCD, which will fully replace the Universal and PackageCD set. The LiveCD also features a fully-fledged Gnome environment. Later releases will include KDE support as well as a new LiveDVD.

gnupg-1.9.20 has been marked stable, allowing its added features GPG-AGENT (passphrase caching) and GPGSM (S/MIME support) to be made available to all users of Gentoo Linux. As the GnuPG developers have indicated these features are ready for production use. Following their recommendation, the gpg executable on your system is still the gnupg-1.4 version, as gnupg-1.4 and gnupg-1.9 are both installed at the same time (in different slots).

If you want to use the development version of gpg please enable USE=gpg2-experimental, then emerge gnupg-1.9 and the executable /usr/bin/gpg2 will be installed. It will only be used if explicitly called, and by applications that are gpg2-aware. Not all applications look for gpg2 or understand its interfaces, which is why gnupg-1.4 is also installed.

As a result of the stabilization the gpg-agent package is superseeded by gnupg-1.9.20. For information on how to use gpg-agent see Gentoo GnuPG User guide.
