Well guys im planning on buying an External HDD. What do you recommend? Is it also possible to have an external HDD standalone on a network rather than linked to a computer. So linked to a router/hub via ethernet cable?

Maxtor Fusion

You mean something like this?
Nebon
Yes i think that is the kind of thing i want, it plugs into the network and can be shared. Maybe a smaller size would be good. 100GB? Any good places to shop around?
Nebon
Well after shopping around i have finally 2 choices. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...9024337-6407648

Anyone recommend anything else or any problems i would encounter with these 2?

Sorry can't offer any more advice as I've never had one. Thought about it but then realised I didn't have the money :)

Heya friends

when it's wanted to share HDD space with others of your home network I would give Netgears Storage Central SC101 a chance: http://www.netgear.com/products/details/SC101.php.

When looking for a storage device as a "data-carrier" which should be easy to use and handle I would check for a 2,5"-external HDD like Trekstor with the DataStation pocket x.u series offers: http://www.trekstor.de/de/products/detail_hdd.php?pid=4. I like these "smallies" cause they don't need any extra power supply (powered by the USB connection cable) and they are handy compared with 3,5"-external devices.

If you have an old 3,5"- or 2,5"-HDD with 10 GB less I would buy a box which suites for that HDD. There are lot of vendors offering such boxes.

Howdy Connor

well there are many of such external storage systems but I would buy a system where you can change the HDD device in case of problems or when larger HDD's aren't so expensive. Such a solution gives you much more variability ;)

Hmmm just buying a box and new HDD's would be expensive, but it would be a sound investment. Maybe we should pin up a list of all manufactors of external HDD's in this forum.

Just buying a 250gb hard drive is about £150 pounds and buying an external HDD of that size is about £80.

When we would do that we have to take care of the topics and information. You know that lot of smaller, unexpensive vendors are giving up. Additionally GSF does not do in any promo actions for resellers etc.

Have a great day mate
