Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?

My computer sometimes runs about as fast as my first 386! I've tried to get rid of most of those annoying little programs it came with, but I think a few things managed to slip by. I'm running Windows XP, and the only AOL program I use is AIM Triton. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Mike

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.

The program will take longer to run, but will give us more information.

If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
The logfile is named 'Startup Programs' by default and will be located where the program is.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Nothing there either. Now to check for rootkits...

Please download RootKitRevealer from here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/files/rootkitrevealer.zip
Unzip it to the desktop, run it, and click Scan. This will generate a log file; please post the entire contents of the log file here for me to see.

Here are the results from RootkitReveal. On a side note, while this was scanning Norton detected and deleted Trojan.Startpage twice.

I'm not sure what to think about the Norton hits. Most likely caused by RootKit Revealer scanning. You can check the Norton quarantine for inof and then clear it. I would not make anything out of it.

So far, all the lgos are negative. I would clean the temp files and folders (info below) then defrag the disk. If the slowdown still occurs, then open Task Manager and see if there is any indication of a program using a constant percent of the CPU (except System Idle)

Download CCleaner from the link at the upper right of this page: http://www.ccleaner.com. If you don't want the Yahoo toolbar, be sure to UNcheck that option when installing the software or update.

Instructions for using CCleaner:
    1. Launch CCleaner and under Options > Advanced > UNcheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
    2. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    3. To protect logon cookies that you wish to retain, under Options > Cookies. Select and using the arrow move those cookies to the "Cookies to keep" column.
    4. Then select the items you wish to clean up. (For options not listed, choose as you see fit)
    1. In the Windows Tab:
    * Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    * Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    * Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    * Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    * Clean any others that you choose.
    2. In the Applications Tab:
    * Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
    * Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    * Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    * Please UNcheck "Utilities" (i.e., Ad-Aware, ewido and other security program logs.)

    5. Click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
    6. Click exit.
    7. Shutdown/restart the computer.

I like CCleaner. It cleaned up 378.9MB of space. I ran Defrag and it's a LOT quicker. I don't think it's ever ran this fast. Thanx a million. I plan to do my wifes computer soon. She can't open Internet Explorer anymore becuase it opens so many pop-ups that it freezes. She also has trouble with her computer freezing when she lets it sit idle for too long. After I do some cleaning of old programs I'll probably enlist your help again.

Thanx again,
Mike
