I found a small tutorial to make an old style cannon and have it ready for animation,
here.There were a couple of cool things along the way.
One was changing the shape of an object as you go. With your object selected and in edit mode on the top menu, click and hold on the two small arrows facing opposite directions then drag your cursor to the shape you want.

There was a good one too where you do the old, hold Ctrl - right click to bring up the names of your objects to select, but next time do this, when your list is displayed let go of Ctrl and hold down Shift while you select. You can repeat the process to get as many named objects to stay selected you want or deselect ones you don't want.
A time saver too is when you have a material set up to where you like it, click on 'copy' in the editor before you close it, then the next new shape you make and you want it to have the exact same material simply press 'paste' when you open the material lab. No doubt the pros knew that but I missed it, LOL.
