Childsplay is a suite of Open Source, Free, educational games for young children, like gcompris, but without the overkill of c/c++ and the gnome environ. Also the use of the SDL libraries makes smooth animation and the playing of sound very easy. The aim is to be educational and at the same time be fun to play.
Childsplay uses a plug-in system for the game modules. (There are two built-in games: memory and a typing game.) These games are packaged in plugin-packages (only one for now). You must first install Childsplay before you can use these games, because they only work from within Childsplay. Some of these games use localized speech soundfiles, be sure to check the download section if you need a language other then standard english.

"Schoolsplay" is a new project intended to eventually replace Childsplay. Schoolsplay tries to address the design problems in childsplay by using a more object oriented (OO) design. This will make Schoolsplay more robust and scalable as well as allow for easier customization by the user. In addition to the design considerations Schoolsplay will also add extensive data collecting, per user, to the various activities. Childsplay will of course be maintained until schoolsplay can replace it. Stay tuned....
