Hi Friends!

I keep getting this annoying pop up which says ...
Stop! Windows requires immediate attention. msreg.com

I have just migrated to a new system bbut feel it is vulnerable.
I now have Windows XP which is a little scary, used Windows ME till yesterday!

I use Firefox2.0.01.
Have Ad Aware, Spybot, AVG Anti Virus, Hijackthis all duly installed and updated.
But none of them licked this problem!

Finally came to this forum!
Am posting my hijackthis log ...
Someone please help!
Am a dud with PCs but will surely do my best!

A salute to you folks!

Me Paparazzi

Here is my hijackthis log ...

You posted a startup list, not a HiJackThis log...

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Start HiJackThis, and click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post here and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Press the 'Scan' button and when done check the following items in HijackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Update Firewall System] ctfmom.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Network Firewall] C:\WINDOWS\System32\firewall.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Update Firewall System] ctfmom.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmom.exe <-- be careful, the real file is ctfmon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\firewall.exe

**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Hi LoPhatPhuud

Another Astonishing Development!

When I now tried to go into safe mode
through the msconfig the system configuration utility
does NOT SHOW the boot tab at all!

Why on earth would that happen?

Getting a little apprehensive!

Me Paparazzi
LoPhatPhuud
The HJT entries are still there and I suspect the files are there as well, Possibly set as system files which requires another switch to be set. We'll verify existance and delete if present another way.

First:
1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text (including the words 'Files to delete:') contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

QUOTE
Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmom.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\firewall.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Second:
Run HiJackThis and press the Scan' button

When the scan is finished:
Check the following items in HijackThis.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Update Firewall System] ctfmom.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Network Firewall] C:\WINDOWS\System32\firewall.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Update Firewall System] ctfmom.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Hi LoPhatPhuud

A Good Morning to you ...

Followed all the guidelines ...

Here are the logs ...

Two more additional points ...
One, my system clock goes for a toss every time the PC reboots. Right now
the time is messed up
and often the year is in FIVE figures!

The entries did not vanish in hijackthis!

Thanks again for your help and here are the reports ...

The cmaudio loads on startup and is seen in my system tray ... most annoying!
Cannot get it off!
Norton AntiVirus, and PCTV were REMOVED from this system long ago!
Yet their entires appear!
Would love to knock off all entries ...

LoPhatPhuud
Are the files back too, or just the registry entries?
mepaparazzi
Hi LoPhatPhuud

Gosh! Now how does one figure that out?

Me Paparazzi
LoPhatPhuud
Check to see if these files are present:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmom.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\firewall.exe

Be sure to have hidden and system files viewable.
mepaparazzi
Checked it!

Nope chief ... the files are not there!

Wot next?
U online for how long now?

Me Paparazzi
