I have got a friends laptop but somehow they have removed the "connection settings " on ie.. i need to change it from connecting through a proxy to detecting connection settings automatically.

Give this a try: Right Click on Internet Explorer >> Internet Properties >> Connections Tab >> Lan Settings (At the bottom) >> check the 'Detect settings automatically' box
