I'd like an explanation of this, as well, please. I've read about the 15-day defence excludes - still confused.

Taking a quote from an email reply that Ilya sent me a few months ago.
"Download Areas are the areas that you use for file downloading with your browser.
This information is used for 15-days auto-protection of downloaded
files."
Hope this helps.

I personally interpret that as the files you download are monitored for 15 days or something similar.

If I execute a download from one of the download areas and the perp:) tries to harm my registry etc then DW will alert me ?

When you download file with extension, that need to be auto-protected from untrusted process modifications (executable files, for instance), DW adds in into "Defense Excludes" list (otherwise, its download process would fail) and, thus, could be modified by untrusted processes. But, if this file is already downloaded, it need to be protected from modification. Thus, "Download Areas" are folders that are watched by DW and, if untrusted process-created file is there and it is 15 days-old, it automatically removes from "Defense Excludes" list, you don't need to think about removing it manually from this list.
