My CD-RW drive can play disks (even rewritable ones) fine, but it won't burn them anymore. I used a Memorex CD-R last night and it didn't work. But after getting the dust off the drive, it burned fine. But today I'm using a Fujifilm CD-RW and it won't let me burn anything. I've been trying to burn music, but tried a Word document just to see if that was affected too...and sure enough it is. What I don't understand is that the CD drive plays disks, but won't burn them. I don't know if it's certain brands that don't work, but this hasn't happened before. I've tried burning disks using the Easy Burning Wizard (or whatever the default one in Windows is) and DeepBurner Pro, and both aren't working. Is my drive defective? Or are the disks I'm using bad? Is there something I'm missing? Any help on this would be most appreciated. Thanks.

If it worked fine before and now your having trouble it sounds like the drive has failed or is failing.
How old is the CD-RW unit?

The CD-RW drive is different from the regular CD-ROM drive since its laser can operate on the different power levels. The highest level causes phase transitions in the recording material and is used for data recording. The medium level is used for annealing or erasure. And the lowest level of laser power is used for data reading - scanning the pits and lands without damaging the disk surface.
