Full Version: Hosts management

Peter O
Hello,
Not exactly a newbie but I have found time to again review my security provisions:
OS is XP Pro with SP2
All latest security updates by auto-update installed.
Use IE 7 exclusively as internet browser.
Use MS outlook as my email progy & MS Outlook Express as my Newsgroups progy.
Antivirus is Free AVG 7.5 with all auto updates installed, runs daily at night.
Sunbelt 4 free (formerly Kerio7 I think) is my firewall progy.
Adaware, & Spybot S & D, also Spyware Blaster are installed & are manually updated weekly.
I believe I installed some host restrictions ages ago but really did not grasp fully then & still don't even after several hours on this update project today.

Until I ran "Kasperski online scan" I believed myself to be virus etc free, & general PC behaviour confirmed, although my machine is generally sluggish. Pentium 3; IMHz; 256 RAM; etc.

Now Kasperski has located 6 viruses & 2 trojans.
I think these are false alerts but God alone knows I don't & AVG has not reported any.
Kept the Kasperski report & can provide on request.

Have today also installed: Hosts; HostsManager; HostsXpert; HostsInstall & Hostman 3beta.
I can't see any rational intuitive procedure apparent when I open any of these "programs".
Put simply what the heck does one do.
I know that somehow I am required to download all the latest hosts which I think means unacceptable sites & somehow load into the restricted sites of IE7.
Should not this be easy??????????

Sure would appreciate any comment on the Kasperski result & some stepwise help on "hosts".

Thanks

Hi -
Regarding hosts files, they are different than restricted sites. They are not as efficient as IE's restricted sites - but they have a large advantage in that they work on the TCP/IP level - so they effect all web browsers, not just IE. When Using Hosts to Block bad sites, you are essentially redirecting the browser from "bad-site-x" to IP address 127.0.0.1 - or your Localhost, which is a dead end.

With HostsXpert 4.0, to get started click the "download" button in the lower left, click on "MvpsHOsts" and then "replace". that will replace your current hosts file with MVPsHOsts HOsts file. See how that works. HpHosts in a more agressive (and larger) hosts file, which blocks more ads and tracking methods etc. See how you like that. You can "Replace" your hosts file with one, then Merge the other file with it for an even more super duty Hosts file.

As for what Kaspersky may or may not have found you may want to post a hiJack log here for an expert to look at. If so, follow these guidelines here: http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/index...showtopic=10517
