Grafpup Linux
Grafpup is a compact distribution containing the Linux kernel and various Open Source and freeware programs. It is especially well suited towards graphic artists and other imaging proffessionals but has many other tools available as well. Grafpup has been loosely based upon Puppy Linux, which is a creation of Barry Kauler. However, there are a lot of unique features which set it apart both from it's parent and most other Linux distributions.

Grafpup strives to provide a complete workflow for the digital artist, from beginning to end. As such along with the major graphics applications like Gimp and Inkscape you will also find a variety of support programs and extra features. Color management is enabled for all applications that support it, and there is a basic selection of color profiles included in the standard install. For those doing photographic work there is almost complete support for raw image formats via both dcraw and the ufraw plugin (both Gimp and Cinepaint), as well as the gtkam utility for directly connecting a wide variety of cameras. Scribus and Abiword take care of publishing needs, and Gutenprint provides a wide range of printer drivers.

Being based on a very recent Linux kernel Grafpup is by it's very nature more secure than Windows. However, some live distros (Puppy Linux included) compromise security somewhat by running all graphical applications as the system administrator. Grafpup is a big departure in this regard and runs a full multi-user environment, just like a conventional *nix is supposed to do.

Need to configure something or install a few software packages? Just give the admin password once and do what you need to do.

"Grafpup 2.00 (final) is officially on the mirrors. This release comes with some really bleeding edge features when compared with previous versions of Grafpup, such as a 2.6.20.2 kernel, revamped package management with dependency resolution, Gimp-2.3.14, Cinepaint-0.22 with the cvs Ufraw plug-in, a brand new control panel, cdrkit replacing cdrtools, Openbox replacing IceWM, and a host of other changes. In addition to the lightweight Openbox desktop you can also now easily download and install both XFCE4 and KDE. The software repository has blown up to include over 1100 titles (and counting). Those of you who have been following the progress will no doubt already know about most of this, however there have been a few more bugs patched in the days following rc2. A bug in /etc/profile was making the login manager malfunction and default to a login screen even when automatic login was chosen. There was also a bug of ommission relating to the ipw3945 network driver. Other than that the most noticable things will be some improvements to the internal documentation (which will be ongoing over the course of the next few releases) and the total replacement of the old website with the new one at grafpup.org.

For those wishing to give it a spin you can follow either the download link , or else visit bubbleletter.org for what is usually a faster mirror, once again thanks to David May for the bandwidth."
