I keep getting a pop up message on startup that says windows\system32\drvduc.dll is missing and it tells me this is a critical error. My computer has been running SO SLOWLY in the past few days. I've run both a virus and spyware scan, caught a few things, but it's like I'm back to dial up. It also seems that when I try to open either a virus scan site or a help site to rid me of this problem, it automatically closes those browser windows, like it knows I'm trying to get rid of the problem. I had to access this site from a different computer. If you could help, that would be fantastic.

When I try to click on the link for HiJack this, it closes my window. I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do to get around that.

Click Here to download the current version of HiJackThis.

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Open Notepad > Click on Format > Uncheck Word wrap, if checked.
• Double-click on the desktop icon for HJTsetup.exe.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and HijackThis (HJT) will launch.
  
• Close any/all browsers, messenger, mediaplayer, Office and mail client windows and applications.
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button; HJT will then scan and a log showing the results should open in notepad.
• Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the contents of the log to your clipboard.
• Come back here to this thread, right click your mouse and select Paste to paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
• Make certain your post shows the entire log, please.

What do I do if it won't let me download HiJack this? It gets to about 350Kb then it closes the window before it's allowed to finish. And now I can't even get it to come up. I think whatever I have knows I'm trying to fix it and won't let me... if that makes sense.

If you have an AntiVirus installed, run it. Make sure it does the entire hard drive. If you have an AntiSpyware program, run that too. If no AntiSpyware program, try downloading AVG AntiSpyware (http://www.grisoft.com) and running that.

THen run HiJAckThis.

There is the log I finally got it to work 24 hours later! Is there anyway I can get rid of unnecessary things and make my computer work better? It just always seems so bogged down.

First:
Please download
VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.


Second:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Press the 'Scan' button and when done check the following items in HijackThis:

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Also, you had C:\WINDOWS\retadpu2000352.exe on the list to delete in safe mode, I noticed there is also a C:\WINDOWS\retadpu1000272.exe in existance...is this something I need to go back and delete? Or is it a good thing?

PLease delete: C:\WINDOWS\retadpu1000272.exe It was not in the log but not a file you want on your computer. The other missing files were to be expected. Some are deleted by replacments, others by prvious anti spyware programs. The main issue is to be sure they are gone. Now for that last one...


First:
1. Please download [url=1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

• Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
• Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text (including the words 'Files to delete:') contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):



Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

• Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
• Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
• Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
• Click Done
• Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
• Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

• It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
• On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
• After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
• The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply


Second:
Run HiJackThis and press the Scan' button

When the scan is finished:
Check the following items in HijackThis.
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsgf32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winsgf32.dll

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

I ran the last HiJackThis and the log is posted below. I had a couple of other questions too, I see that the O4 Startup.protected is still in the log, this was one of the things you told me to select and fix and it said it protected...is that going to be a problem? And on start up I get an error message :"Erro Loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\drvduc.dll The specified module could not be found" This is the error message that orginally made me post here. Is this going to be a problem for me in the long run?

Now, unless there are still issues not reflected in your log(s), your system is clean and we are finished. Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer. This includes SP1 and SP2 if you use Windows XP. The first defense against infection is a properly patched Operating System.

If you have Word, Excel, Outlook or other Office programs installed. Consider using Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update. See the FAQ page here for more information: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdat...t.aspx?ln=en-us

Also, download and install Microsoft Baseline Analyzer.(Note that MBSA is only for Win 2000 SP3 or later and Office XP or later) When run, it will check system for security exposures, including missing updates. 2. Check your Java Runtime version. (Current=1.6, aka Version 6 Update 1)
You can check the current version of the Java Runtime Modules installed by opening the Java Control Panel and selecting 'About' from the 'General' tab.
The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 ' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

Note: Be sure to remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs before you install the new one. Remember to reboot after removal.

3. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Select Internet Options from the Control Panels, or from Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options)
Press 'default level', then OK
Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section set these options:
'Download signed ActiveX controls' - Prompt
'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' - Disable
'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not maked as safe'- Disable
All other options accept the default

Also,for Sp2 SP2 and IE users, in IE, Tools -> Manage Add-ons will give you a list of all BHO's, Extensions, and ActiveX modules installed on your computer. You can update, enable or disable them.

4. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster (ActiveX protection): http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
c. HostsXpert (HOSTS file manager): http://www.funkytoad.com


5. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing one (or more) of the following:
a. Windows Defender: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspx
NOTE: Windows Defender only runs on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 2003.
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
c. AdAware Personal: http://www.lavasoft.de/

Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware. I recommend a combination of Microsoft Spyware and TeaTimer from Spybot S&D.

If you use, or plan on using, additional spyware/malware detection and/or removal programs, please check Items 8 and 9.

6. Install A Toolbar to Detect Phishes
Phishing is prevalent and on the rise. Make sure the site you go to is real. Your ISP may offer a toolbar to warn you of fake sites or you can choose one of the following
a. Spoofstick Toolbar
b. Netcraft Toolbar
c. PhishGuard

Note: Internet Explorer v7 and FireFox v2 include have built-in antiphishing capabilities. No 3rd party toolbar is required.

7. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP or Windows Vista, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

8. Clean Temporary Files and Folders
Download and install the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! from here:

Cleanup! will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders (a common hiding place). You may also regain a massive amount of disk space.

Run the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! that you have already downloaded and installed
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Then reboot into normal mode to let it clean out the remaining files.

9. Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

11. Alternate Browser
Consider using an alternate browser as your default. I recommend and use Firefox as my primary browser. It is still necessary to keep Internet Explorer current and protected in order to use Windows Update.

If you use FireFox as your primary browser, then I recommend installing the NoScirpt extension:
