I am working on a friend's Dell Inspiron 6000. It was starting up much slower than a 1.6mhz processor w/512mb RAM should.

I removed Yahoo Toolbar and ran updates for Windows. He is currently running Norton Internet Security 2007.

Prior to the current issue with Blue Screen of Death, I ran CCleaner, CWShredder and HiJack This (did not save the log file, as I had yet to run Adaware 2007 and Spybot 1.5). At this point, I also had not run a Disk Defrag.

I ran Spybot and it found 60+ entries for a trojan named "Winhound" & one entry for a "Smitfraud -C". I had Spybot remove these items, then started on Adaware 2007.

This is when the Blue Screen of Death appears with "Stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8235F4E8, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)". Microsoft site asks me to run a chkdsk c: /f after reboot and makes comment about diabling or removing any antivirus software.

I proceed to disable all Norton Internet Security 2007 options loaded, run the "chkdsk c:/f" from cmd, which of course will need to run after restart, which I select.

Now, I can not even get into Windows, not even through "Safemode" or "Safemode with command prompt". I even select the "Last Known Good Configuration", but to no avail. Keep coming back to the BSOD.

Any suggestions? Is it safe to say that I will need to reformat and reinstall Windows?

Thanks,
SLaW

I would striktely recommended that cause:

How much time will you waste by trying to remove all malware? Believe me, a fresh installation and taking care of the patches, hotfixes and updates is recommended much faster and safer too.

B. Udo,

Merry Christmas to you too!

After posting, I decided to run a repair install of Windows. This seems to have cleared up the BSOD issue. Thanks for the clean install recommendation. Adaware is running now.

I will be posting a HiJack This log after running the disk defrag -- of course posting it in the proper forum

Thanks,
SLaW
