Hello,

I have searched the forum but cannot find this, so I am posting a link for Dryad (tree generator). There are quite a number of options, and it is easy to use.

http://dryad.stanford.edu/index.php

One warning, is that it will attempt to connect to its server to download trees, it will also attempt to upload any tree you create (when saving), but blocking this as no ill effect on the program.

Chachazz
"Dryad lets you intuitively create beautiful trees for your virtual world or game. In Dryad, you create a tree by visually navigating to it through a design space: the space of all trees. This space has close to a hundred dimensions and Dryad lets you move around it as if it were a city map. To help you find your way, Dryads around the world communicate to share which trees were picked in the past. A collaborative mapping of the tree space emerges, which your Dryad uses to gently steer you towards high-quality finds. We call this collaborative design space exploration."

Dryad was created by the Stanford Virtual Worlds Group, as part of our work on broadening the accessibility of virtual worlds.

Dryad is free for you to use for any purpose, including commercial applications. However, Dryad is provided entirely "as is" and without warranties of any kind. Please note that, for our research, we collect some anonymous usage statistics about Dryad."

Very nice Stem - thanks for the info! yourock.gif

Dryad needs a dedicated graphics card.

It should work on most PCs running Windows XP or Vista 32-bit) with at least 1 GB of memory. You will need approximately 50 MB of free hard drive space. Please make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.

Dryad should work on most Apple computers running Mac OS 10.4 or higher that contain a dedicated graphics card and at least 1 GB of memory. You will need approximately 100 MB of free hard drive space.

Hi Chachazz,

Just to add.

The program is standalone~ you do not actually install.
The output is in obj format, so just about all other 3d programs will be able to import the tree after its been exported from Dryad.

The textures are very basic, these are only plain color, but once imported into your 3d application, you can easily add leaf/bark textures to make it look more real.

I have just created a tree, then imported this into Bryce (I used the free Bryce 5.5 version) than added leaf/ bark texture, this in all took under 10 minutes. The output is quite good (IMHO)

Looks pretty interesting.

I was looking at their gallery shots there, I think your advice would be needed for making them look better.

Hi odidio,

I can put a post together to show how I textured the tree. Should I show this as done in Bryce5.5, if so, should I make the post to this thread, or to the Bryce forum?.

This post can always be deleted.

Bryce forum I guess, up to you.

Couple of things though I was reading, especially from their FAQ;

Why does Dryad all of a sudden take much longer to load than it used to?

If you haven't used Dryad in a while, it's likely that many new trees have been added to our database since you last logged in. Downloading these trees can take some time.

At 17.5MB for the prog, do you actually make them yourself and share to the database, or get them from the database ?

The requirements are a bit steep for my comp....................don't know if I will try it.

The download comes with quite a few trees with different types, these can be selected and then used, or select one and then edit to what you want.
I do not allow the program to connect out to the database, there is no need.

The main requirement is that you have an openGL graphics card. HD space: 21mb for the program and database,.. then just HD space for trees you export.
