"Copying Your Local Firefox Settings

If you're using a local copy of Firefox, you may wish to just copy your local Firefox settings right into Firefox Portable. Your local Firefox profile is usually installed in C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.???\ Just copy the contents of that folder (except the cache directories) to the FirefoxPortable\Data\profile directory. Then, and this is important, delete the file FirefoxPortableSettings.ini within the FirefoxPortable\Data\settings directory, if there is one. When you start Firefox Portable for the first time, it's recommended that you turn off disk cache, password saving and history if you're using a flash-based portable device. You can set all of these within the Privacy tab of the Firefox Options window. Sometimes, certain profiles will cause the launcher to fail or hang. It's best to give it a few minutes to see if it's just checking compatiblity and adjusting the locations of the extensions before giving up on it. If it fails, it is usually due to an incompatible extension."

The above instructions seem not to work for me. Using Vista Home Premium,

2gb Kingston USB device. Mozilla Portable current version, installed today, march 22. Mozilla Desktop version: 2.00.12

The folder with the profile in the PC desktop: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\oq3n98ja.default, contains three items, a cache folder and two files: XPC.mfl and XUL.mfl.
When copying and pasting the two *.mfl files into the P:\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile folder, only the two files are copied, as the instructions say delete the cache.

Yet, when I start Mozilla portable no profile info is properly applied, the home page is Google, not my home page (NY Times), and no passwords are evident in portable tools> options> security> show passwords. Passwords are blank. Bookmarks and cookies also not copied.

Am traveling on Sunday and baffled how to in effect import my profile. Please advise.

Than you in advance,
Robert

Hi Robert; Welcome to GSF;

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Prof... is the cache. Your profile is not stored there.
Do not copy anything from there over to Portable Firefox.

Reading the instructions above , it states copy from...(and that's where your profile is):

C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profile

Such a folder does not exist in Vista Home Premium.

That is what is baffling me. There is NO Documents and Settings folder in Vista Home Premium.

Please advise correct folder, then I will be able to correctly follow instructions.

Thanks for point out the discrepancy.

Hi rjl24

and welcome at GSFs. I'm running Firefox at Vista Ultimate and it runs perfect. I hadn't to do any "tuning" by copying any files or folders like you describe.

Be sure that "missing" folder is there, but it's hidden. Has to do with the settings of the Windows Explorer which hides system relevant folders and files.
I'll get back to you tomorrow what to do cause my Vista system is in use with some important updates right now (SP1!)

Greetz and thanks for being patient

Thanks. Had to go to my son's and what I did was download and install load full Mozilla to his computer using Mozilla backup info from my computer to backup passwords, etc. However I am still curious about Documents and Settings folder re Mozilla portable.

I un hid folders on my Vista home Premium computer to allow me to see the AppData folder but no Document and Settings folder appeared. Looking forward to your thoughts,
Robert
PS I also downloaded SP1. Wonder if things Re Vista (which i really like) will settle down now among naysayers,.

Hi Robert

I've had a closer look at my Vista system after installing SP1. What I found was this here:

The former structure (like you said)

C:\Documents and Settings\....

got changed into

C:\Users\...

The former folder

\Application Data

is now

\AppData\Local

and here you'll find your Mozilla root folder. Sorry for publishing the attachement in German, but my Vista system in English is still under construction.
