Hello gang,
My family has two computers, the main one is on first floor and we want to hook up the second one in the basement. Of course, the cable will never reach to the router.
Is there another way I could hook the second on up?
Thanks

A wireless router upstairs that would then be able to service the one downstair..or just a regualr router upstair with a cat 5 type cable going from that router to the one in the basement. You can get cable that long and run them through the floor.
With the wireless router it would also mean if anyone visited they could use their laptop to access the internet also anyplace in your home without being hardwired into your router..the same would hold true for you if you had a laptop..we sometime sit at our patio and use a laptop...most of them now days have the wireless built into the laptop.
With a wireless router you are just setting up a transmit/receive type system..the PC upstairs would be directly hooked up to it at one of the four ports on the router..everything else would be wireless through a small antenna.
They are not difficult to set up.
You would need a wireless card fro the PC in the basement..but they are also not hard to hook up.
I hope both PC's have at least WinXP as the operating system..because Win98 vintage PC's can be made wireless..but it usually take more steps to hook up and many wireless cards now days do not have the drivers on the installation cd for win98.

Okay, that's what I figured but wasn't sure. The PC on the main floor has Vista and the one in the basement would have XP Pro.
I have to look in my box of toys and see if the other Cat5 cable is long enough.
I have the draft-N by Buffalo and I love it and I really don't want to change it.
Hunter I appreciate your help, thank you.

Yes..I understand..my brother has a business next door to his home and even runs a cat 5 cable from it to his house and there is not much degradation of signal he also has wireless..so both could be used. Nice to it with cat 5 for you..only because that means one less thing taken out of the whole equation if there is a problem..both PC would be hooked up hardwire to the router if one did not get a signal the other most likely would have the same problem and you could troubleshoot it faster.
Good Luck.
