i have bought a new internal harddrive since my current one seems to be on the verge of failing. but how do i transfer the files from my current internal harddrive to the new one that i bought. what i mean, how do i transfer EVERYTHING, including the operating system, and all of my current files to the new harddrive.
i am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this but thanks for any help.

Hi 00Wu
You can't 'copy' files from one HDD onto another one. The OS is the reason why. Won't work after all. You need a program or tools which duplicates the current drive onto a new HDD source. Would duplicate a drive in DOS mode only cause my experiences with programs creating a duplicate when Windows works hadn't been the best.
If you need more details, you know where we are

I would recommend to create a backup of your important files (except the OS) first. Gives you a bit more safer feeling when going on the mentioned "duplicating experiments" ;)

TheSentinel is correct you can't just "copy" your hdd drive this doesn't work.
What you need to do is clone your drive this can be done free with the following software.
Easeus Disk Copy
http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/Driveimage XML
http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htmIf you have either a Seagate / Maxtor hdd you can use the following which is basically Acronis True Image V10.
Data Migration:
If you are upgrading and want to migrate your data from the old drive to the new drive we provide DiscWizard as an option.

thank you both very much for helping but i have a couple of questions. when i use one of the cloning programs, how exactly do i transfer (lack of a better word) the clone to the other harddrive? and what about connecting the 2 harddrives? would i have to directly connect the harddrives or just have the 2nd harddrive connected to my computer?

Hi 00Wu
it depends on which program you did choose. All programs come along with very detailed manula s and "How-2-do" information. When you're starting with cloning drives make sure which drive(s) should get cloned. Another important thought: Clone older drives on new but larger ones. Look prices for HDDs had become really inexpensive, so why not choosing a larger drive instead one same size.
I guess your HDDs are using the IDE connection, right? Well when I've to clone drives I mount them via USB using special adapters. Makes it easier cause you can clone all internal drivers without opening the chassis fo your computer (an example:
http://www.digitus.info/en/products/access...209&p=3534)How many drives are mounted in your computer? One, two? Please let us know ;)
Have a great day

alright well i downloaded the Miray Software HD Clone 3.6 and i am cloning from a 160 GB harddrive to a 250 GB one. I don't believe I have the special USB adapters that you mentioned. I currently have one harddrive in my computer right now, I have the other new 250 GB one waiting to be placed in. Should I connect the 250 GB one to my computer then run the clone program (Miray Software thing) to clone my current 160 GB harddrive to the new one?

The drive will need installing in your current system to copy the data across.
NOTE
Ensure you copy the correct DRIVE. You run the risk of wiping all your data.

ok well i have finally cloned my harddrive and finished all that stuff. sorry i responded so late but something weird happened. well right, the new harddrive (250GB) is plugged in and working and my 160 GB one is sitting out and not plugged in at all however, whenever i go to "My Computer" and i click on the local C drive, it still shows that the total size is 153 GB which is what my old harddrive had. is this something that the HD Clone 3.6 program did?

Heya 00Wu
Great you made it. So the 250 GB drive is the mentioned drive C: showing up with ~150GB, right.. means ~ 90GB are not used. Sure it's caused by HD Clone. The free version of that program clones an existing drive 1:1 and that means ~150GB on data if not more are used.
I'm not absolutely sure if there's a same option in XP like in Vista to enhance a drive to it's maximum capacity, but I'll check that for ya, kay? Otherwise I'll or stidyup find a tool for you....

hey TheSentinel! thank you for helping me with this problem. but yes when i look at my C: drive it shows exactly what my old harddrive used to show (thus due to the clone) and I was wondering where the rest of my space went.

Maybe the rest of the space is not formatted or you will have to resize that partition. Try following this guide
here, on how to expand your current partition. Please let us know how it goes.

That guide is for Windows Vista and I have Windows XP. There is a different method if I'm using XP instead of Vista?
