Full Version: Problems installing Kaspersky Internet Security Suite

I have just purchased Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2009 but on trying to install it I keep on getting a message that AVG 8 must be uninstalled first - the only problem here is that AVG 8.0 is NOT installed on my PC.

I used to use the free version of AVG 7.5 - when the new version AVG 8.0 was released a few months ago I downloaded it but had problems installing it (kept on getting Error 0x8007007f ) - therefore for the past few months have been using Avira Anti-vir. I can only assume remnants of the dowloaded file AVG 8.0 remain somewhere on my PC (I definitely deleted it once I was convinced it wasn't ever going to work).

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi bhb and welcome to GSF thumbsup.gif

Not unusual; Programs, especially security, it seems, can leave alot of remnants strewn through the system. Also could be faulty uninstall.

Set a Restore Point before proceeding.

Use Windows Search to find any files on your drive; if it's clear they are AVG, delete them.

1) Go into the registry, search and remove leftovers...(not that difficult)...Start»Run»Regedit»
Edit»Find»and Find Next for successive entires. Take due care, altering needed registry files can compromise your system.

2) or scan the registry and remove leftovers with a utility....Registry Cleaners - System Optimizers;
Be careful and select to remove only what is clearly AVG. CCleaner also has a registry cleaner...as well a portable(non-install)edition.

Hope it will clear the conflict. Perhaps other members will have more suggestions.

In future, why not use Revo Uninstaller - it runs the program's uninstall utility(that's what Windows does) and then scans your system for leftovers. It's pretty good..free...portable(ie: non-install version available).

I wasn't sure but I've read about an uninstaller for AVG AV. Here is the link:

If it does not work, follow the advices our Chachazz mentioned. But be aware: All on your own risk!

The problem could be that the engine or component(s) was still running when uninstalled and a service is left behind.

Try these steps first before anything else.

Look at Windows Services: Start/Run/services.msc
If any AVG are running, first stop - then disable.

Look into Configuration/Startup programs:
(XP)Start»Run»msconfig»Startup tab.
(Vista)Type MSCONFIG in search box »enter or doubleclick on it»Startup Tab.

Look for anything AVG or it's components. Uncheck, Apply, backout and restart your machine.
So then proceed with the clean up.

All else failing, re-install and uninstall again. Stop all protections and parts settings of AVG first.

It's best to shut down all protections of a security program before uninstalling.

Chachazz and The Sentinel,

Thanks for taking the time to help sort my problem.

Followed the advice given in your posts with the following results:

Installed Revo Uninstaller - ran Junk File prog but no traces of AVG found. Also ran registry cleaner in CCcleaner but no traces found

Tried installing AVG 8 again so that I could uninstall it but keep getting the error mentioned in my original post.

I downloaded Myuninstaller but again no trace of AVG was found.

No trace of AVG when accessing either
1. Windows Services: Start/Run/services.msc. OR
2. Configuration/Startup programs: (XP)Start»Run»msconfig»Startup tab.

I again tried to install Kaspersky but again it informs me that AVG 8.0 must be deleted first.

It has me beat .. .... any further help is appreciated.

Got work very early tomorrow morning so got to get some "shut eye" - will log on tomorrow evening

Thanks again

Thanks for your kind words. We appreciate them friends.gif. Open a Taskmanager window and look out for all started applications (sort em by name) is there any entry starting with AVG? If there's no entry with that name please move over to the processes tab. Sort all processes by name and look out for entries which are named avg in all ways. Tell us about the results of your search.

Thanks for your help in advance mate ;)

The Sentinel - Good Evening from a cold and wet Scottish summer night

I have used Task Manager as requested - no trace of AVG in Start Up applications
However in Processes I found avgnt.exe and avguard.exe which at first I thought might be the problem but believe these might relate to Avira anti-virus software I am currently using.

The Sentinel probably won't be back for awhile.

Make your choice....running multiple AVs and Firewalls is just not a good thing; conflicts and possible system instability. (oh, it's possible with some products with a little knowledge but I doubt Kaspersky is going to allow other AV/Firewall).

If KSS is going on your machine, remove other.
barrheadbluenose
Chachazz thanks for the quick reply

I am aware that no PC should run with 2 different anti-virus applications.
I am using Avira for the moment ONLY because I am unable to install Kaspersky Security Suite - until I overcome the continuing problem of KSS demanding AVG 8.0 be removed from my PC I cannot install KSS - therefore if I want to continue surfing the net meantime I require "protection" and as such I am using Avira anti-virus,and Comodo Pro firewall.

Heya barrheadbluenose

KAV offers a really good online support at http://www.kaspersky.com/support .
If you want a removal tool for any KAV products look for instructions and downloading KAVremover9, check over at http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208279752 and if you want more details how to remove any other AV installations please have a look here http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=5233

Hi barhead:

Let's go back: Original problem is AVG7/8 clash.
I suggest first to reinstall AVG 7 and do a nice neat uninstall, or reinstall AVG 8 and do a repair installation; then go thru the uninstallatin process according to instructions on AVG site. (please remove all protections first).

It's worth a try.

Good evening Chachazz

As suggested I have deleted Avira and re-installed AVG 7.5 free
I have downloaded AVG 8 free but when trying to install the application I get the following error message:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Error 0x80070005

This is the same error message I got when I initially tried to install AVG 8.0 on its release earlier this year.

It seems I'm never going to get KSS installed - just my luck - the first time I pay for Security software and I cannot use it.

Anyway thanks for your continued help - it is appreciated

A Windows Error; Unless I missed it, what system are you running; is it fully patched?

You are running as Administrator...

Chachazz

I'm running Windows XP (SP2) - I have all updates (PC set to receive updates automatically from Microsoft)

Went into the Event Viewer - but no warnings or errors listed under Apps, Security or Systems

As its after midnight I'm off to bed - will log in later this morning.

Thanks again

Well I've done some researches at the web and could find a notice dealing exactely with the same error message at the German Trojaner-Board (no solution published), Major Geeks (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=159786), Webuser Forums UK , TechSpot , Tech Support Guy

Hi The Sentinel

I've also spent sometime trawling the Web looking for problems/solutions similar to mine without success.

Summary of my problem is:

I want to install KSS but it advises I must first remove AVG 8.
However the big problem is I DO NOT have AVG 8 installed.
Each time I try to install AVG 8 I get error message: "Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key.... Error 0x80070005"

So in essence its a vicious circle - I need to uninstall AVG8.0, however before I can do that I need to install it first, which I cannot do.

Looks like the end of the road - anyway folks thanks for your time and help these past few days, its appreciated

We do not give up... not now. Please go for a HJT log to be sure if nothing else is blocking the installation of KIS (=KSS)

Check in here and follow the advices

I assume Firefox is your everyday browser, therefore IE related programs are poor waste of resources.

Firefox: Add NoScript & AdblockPlus with rick742 fliter lists....EasyList/EasyElements/rick-cedrics Tracking Filter.

Thunderbird: Javascript is disabled by default; don't turn it on.

SpywareBlaster is of little use with Firefox it's for IE. (only deals with cookies in Firefox).

Three programs with Intrusion Prevention???

Ok BHB

took a bit longer then expected but I hope I could find a way. All search results about AVG 8.x and its uninstallation gives a clear view: this product is extremely difficult to remove; something that got proofed by Kaspersky Labs. Even the own removal tools of AVG don't work.

Could find a topic in a German forum (http://www.computerbase.de/forum/showthread.php?t=433393) where members did discuss, how to remove AVG 8.x.

Member Korund seemed being successful using RegCleaner (Download: www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html ). He did run tool>Clean Registry>complete perform

Let's hope this will help
