The Big Show
Hi,

I have a Dell 4600 with an Intel®82865G Graphics controller. I have just bought a VGA splitter cable and connected a 2nd monitor. The 2nd monitor powers up Ok but it is a direct mirror of the 1st monitor ie: Taskbar, Start and Icons etc. The Display Properties, Settings does not show the 2 monitors nor does it show the Extend My Desktop options. If I right click the Desktop and choose Graphics Properties the Intel Extreme Graphics box shows that I have only the Single monitor.
Which Driver do I need to install ? The monitors are both Dells.

Regards,

The Big Show.

Hi Big Show

what OS are you running on that box? We need more details please.... I guess it's Dimension 4600 you're talking...?!

Thanks in advance

Hi The Big Show,

If you are running Windows here is a guide to setup dual monitors.

Have a great day

Hi,

Yes it is a Dimension running XP SP3. I have upgraded video drivers from Microsoft but still no luck. The Video Card installed is a VGA type but I do also have a 2nd PC with a DVI that I could swap across if needed, however prefer not to as I thought a Splitter and updated driver would do the trick.

Thanks

Hi Big Show

give me some time please to do some researches at the Dell forums about that problem. Found few hints about problems after updating the device driver of the graphics adapter lately, but must confirm that first.

Hi Big Show

I think I got it now. You try to run 2 monitors at one VGA connector via a splitter. In this case the VGA signal gets splitted and thats why you can see identical desktops at both monitors. The mounted graphics adapter of that Dell Dimension 4600 has one VGA connector only but if you want to get two different desktops or using it as an enhanced desktop, the graphic adapter needs another connector for the second monitor.

The info in the forum is very enlightening. But, being not too savvy about this kind of stuff, I still have a question whether I can use one VGA and one DVI. Here are the specifics.

I have a 4 yr old Dell® Dimension 4600, Intel® Pentium® 4CPU, 2.66 GHz, 2.66 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Service Tag 89LWQ31. It is running XP Professional, Ver 2002, Service Pak 3. It has an LCD connected via a VGA to an installed NVIDIA GeForce4MX4400 with AGP8X(Dell). Dell calls it a CRD,GRPHC,64MB,NV18,DIM, I believe. The graphics card has one VGA and one DVI-I (Dual Link). Now wish to install a second (3 yr old) Dell LCD Monitor that has one VGA and a DVI-D (Dual Link). How can I connect the second LCD, if it is possible, please?

Thanks in advance. Mortn

You would need a VGA to HDMI converter in order to use that VGA output for an LCD. Expensive stuff. If you check the link you'll see it's a heck of alot cheaper to go from HDMI to VGA...

Good morning toadbee…

First of all, that was a terrific W.C. Fields quote. Really got a good laugh out of it.

I checked the link that you provided and it doesn’t appear that any of the combinations would fit. In my machine, the video card has one VGA and one DVI-I (Dual Link). The existing monitor uses the VGA. The second monitor I want to use has a VGA and a DVI-D (Dual Link). Would just an inexpensive DVI to DVI cable be all that I need?

Thanks for your response and for the quote…

Ahhhh My bad.

I think then you just need to get from DVI-I to the DVI-D.

"The DVI-D connector is compatible with both the DVI-D and DVI-I socket, because of this there is no DVI-I to DVI-D converter."
Have a look: http://www.wikiav.com/wiki/DVI

So yes, it appears a simple DVI to DVI will work. Sounds like DVI-D to DVI-D.

When you fire the computer up you'll see the same image on both monitors, you'll need to go into display settings - select the #2 monitor and Check the box to extends you desktop.

Good morning toadbee...
Thanks 10E6 for the very useful information about what I'll need and how to do the set-up. I will either go out and buy (if I can) or buy on-line a 2m DVI-D M/M Dual Link Digital Video Cable. It will go for about 30 bucks. I'll keep you posted when I install it.
You're a pal. Best regards from mortn.

Greetings toadbee...
Got the cable and successfully connected one end of the 2m DVI-D M/M Dual Link Digital Video Cable to the second display DVI socket and the other end to the existing display card DVI socket in the computer. I followed your instructions faithfully. I could not get the second display to show anything but the screensaver which faithfully moved around the screen. Might I need an additional driver for the second display or perhaps a second display card? Any suggestions, please?

Greetings toadbee...
Problem solved. All I had to do was to switch the second display (a button on its front panel) to digital and then do a NVIDEA (Display adapter) Wizard to enable the second display. Total time elapsed was about 5 minutes. It works like a charm. Thanks for your help.
Best regards,

Have fun with the dual monitors, you'll find it hard to go back to one!
